Welcome to my latest “Alternate Voice Actor Meme”… And this time it’s for a live-action film of all things. Why? Well, recently I got the idea for an animated TV special based on The Wizard of Oz (both the book and the 1939 movie). I’m not sure how I got the idea, I’m guessing it was mainly because ABC has been doing all of those TV specials based on musicals (such as Peter Pan) as of recently. So anyway, here’s who I’d cast as the characters if there really was an animated Wizard of Oz TV special…

Character: Dorothy Gale
Previous Actors, Animated or Otherwise: Judy Garland, Liza Minnelli, Fairuza Balk, Janice Kawaye, Janet Waldo, Liz Georges, Grey Griffin, Lea Michele, Laura Bailey
Who I’d Choose: Chloe Grace Mortez
Why Her? We’re all so used to Judy Garland’s iconic performance that it’s hard to imagine anyone else doing the part, and if she were still around I’d definitely let her take on the role again if she wanted. But I decided to go with Chloe Grace Mortez, an actress I know the best for her voicing Darby in My Friends Tigger and Pooh (and she was also going to be in Bolt, but the executives rejected her).

Character: The Scarecrow
Previous Actors, Animated or Otherwise: Ray Bolger, Daws Butler, David Lodge, Mickey Rooney, Justin Case, Michael J. Gough, Dan Aykroyd
Who I’d Choose: Bill Farmer
Why Him? I know Ray Bolger didn’t give the Scarecrow a Southern accent, but for some reason I just think it would fit the Scarecrow. In truth, the voice I imagine Bill Farmer giving the Scarecrow would probably be a cross between the voices he uses for Goofy and Doc from The 7D.
Other Choices: Jack McBrayer, Tom Hanks (I think Woody was inspired a little by the Scarecrow, at least when he runs)

Character: The Tin Man
Previous Actors, Animated or Otherwise: Jack Haley, Don Messick, Hal Rayle, Danny Thomas, Rob Paulsen, Kelsey Grammer
Who I’d Choose: David Hyde Pierce
Why Him? I’m guessing the reason I went with a British Tin Man was because Kelsey Grammer did the voice of the Tin Man in Legends of Oz: Dorothy’s Return. Besides, I like David Hyde Pierce and I think he should do more voice-over work.
Other Choices: Jeff Bennett, Billy Crystal, Nathan Lane

Character: The Cowardly Lion
Previous Actors, Animated or Otherwise: Bert Lahr, Mel Blanc, Charlie Adler, Mel Blanc, Milton Berle, Jason Priestley, Todd Stashwick, Jim Belushi
Who I’d Choose: Kevin Michael Richardson
Why Her? I think Kevin Michael Richardson as the Cowardly Lion was one of the first casting choices I came up with. He’d probably use the same voice he used for Clipper from Wander Over Yonder, with a dash of the voice he used for Grimace in The Wacky Adventures of Ronald McDonald.
Other Choices: Jess Harnell, Richard Kind

Character: The Wicked Witch of the West
Previous Actors, Animated or Otherwise: Margaret Hamilton, Tress MacNeille, Laraine Newman, Courtenay Taylor
Who I’d Choose: Grey Griffin
Why Her? I distinctively remember watching a few videos of voice actors reading lines from various movies in the voices of different characters. At one point in one of them, Grey Griffin did a pretty good impression of the Wicked Witch of the West. So why not? Plus, she’s already done the voice of Dorothy, so having her voice the Witch would be pretty ironic.
