I've always wondered. If you paint over the graphite, doesn't it cover the graphite up?
But in your finished artwork, I can still see the graphite.
How is that so? If you don't mind me asking some pointers. ^^ I wanna learn how to paint with acrylic.

Thin it out with water or you can buy acrylic paint thinners.

Oh, so if you thin out the paint, the graphite wouldn't smudge?

IReallyWannaKnow In reply to abusedmember [2011-02-02 01:38:18 +0000 UTC]

No, not if you put fixative on top of the graphite before you start working with the acrylic. Once the fixative is on, the graphite is set.

I don't think he uses references.

i think he takes his own pictures as references.

Really? Well, it's possible, although I hope not.

IReallyWannaKnow In reply to seafoodchahan [2011-01-31 21:12:54 +0000 UTC]

Maybe for this he didn't but if you watch some of his painting a painting videos he uses his own pictures. And in one of his interviews he said something about using his own pics, family pics, found pics, etc etc, as references. There's nothing wrong with references, using them well and still maintaining a certain level of creativity is what a most of the pros do!

I'm his number one fan.

Oh, I don't claim that there's something wrong with using references. It's merely so that creation from scratch often involves a higher level of creativity and skill. Composition is really imporant when working in 2D, and using a photo or different kind of reference often presents a certain composition that makes it hard to get away from in the work based on it. Not always so, but often. I like Shapcott's work a lot too, and if the result is there I don't really care how he got to it.

Using references doesn't necessarily entail copying exactly. While it is true that creation from scratch often involves a higher level of creativity and skill that's mostly because it's so much harder to not make mistakes in lighting, anatomy, perspective and etc.

I love using references but for a combination of reference and inspiration. This face, that body, that background, this dress. It's much more creative than single reference use but you still get the benefit of not making as many mistakes.
