Description I usually don't post work like this, but I'll try it this time .This is my work from yesterdays figure drawing course in school. The pose is not the best but I couldn't choose . I'm quite satisfied with this (after years of figure drawing). I started to add kind of a painterly feel into the drawings (before I worked just with line and I started to be bored with it). I hope you like it, but also all the crits are very welcome as well.

i really like this (your) drawing style, great expression of the man!! you should really work on that way of drawing, other personalities, other poses and so on. i think that could be a really good progress for you as youΒ΄re already so good!!

thanks, really glad you like it. yeah I'm planning to comtinue doing traditional stuff, now I will have more time for it. But it will be more about painting than drawing I think.

I get involved with your interest in making marks, with the contrast of the thicker, blunt angular marks of the charcoal to the thin line work, which really goes to the emotion of the pose

oh my dog this is INSANE.
how you manage to draw a million freaking lines, some miles from the mark, and somehow carve out the figure perfectly while retaining highlights is so beyond me. i mean WOAH. this is so freaking amazing. please may i grow up to be this good someday.

Well, firstly, are you undergrad, or grad?

I really like the painterly feeling, but I think your drawing could benefit if you only partially finished some parts of the picture, like leaving parts of the leg incomplete, or allowing the line to fall apart. Awesome stuff, though!

michalivan In reply to DamonVonBohn [2008-04-19 16:12:52 +0000 UTC]

I'm still undergrad (I changed schools and stuff so I "wasted" some time, but don't regret it, I learned a lot). But in about two months it will change (hopefully).

I know what you mean with the incomplete stuff, I overworked this image a little.
Thanks and I'm happy you like it

Cool! Your style is very awesome. I'm still not very good with digital media, do they teach you that, or is that your own experimentation?

thanks, I'm glad you like the style, but I think I need to push it more, it's not where I want it to be . Digital media is my own experimentation. I study industrial design, so most of the painting/drawing is just my own direction.

That's awesome.
the university I attend sucks on both fronts. Most of what I've learned I've done on my own, too...

Well, let me think. The only thing I could crit without putting a "Kill me, IΒ΄m a notorious nuisance! sign on me is: I would use more white highlights on the head/face. ItΒ΄s like the U hadnΒ΄t the time to finish the head.
The light is coming more or less from the top (as seen on the legs and hands) so I would put some highlights on the top of the head, maybe on the nose and cheeks, somethinΒ΄ like that. Otherwise itΒ΄s really cool.

I know what you mean, although the face is for me one of the better parts of this pic, I quite like how it is. The problem with works like this is you must guess the right time when to stop

really well done man
i mean yea its just a figure drawing study, but it is very important for every1 to learn, yea i also like the idea of messing with it once it's mastered. right now i myself am in the process of perfecting the line drawing, to i havent gotten to this level

good job

Wow, this is actually quite a great drawing. I know you didn't like the pose and all, but it works. I wouldn't change a thing. It is not only a great drawing, but you've also done a wonderful job of capturing the individual model. I love it. If I walked past a gallery and saw it in the window, I would probably buy it.

Good work,
Aaron

Well I'd say that going the painterly route is working really well. Very kinetic and anything but boring. Keep it up man! And don't hold back on posting more work like this! There's not enough of it on DA.

This is lovely, the way it's rendered really lends an emotional feel. The way you shaded is rather graphic, and makes it different. It's nice to see this deviation from the styles of your other work you usually post. I like the effect of lights and darks, and the difference between his melancholy, curved form in comparison to your jagged values. I've been doing some figure drawings for class, so it's inspirational to see this.
and although the pose is simple, it fits well with the subject and feel.

we don't really get very good models there. Usually they just sit sometimes do some standing pose. This time he was sitting there quite long, so I've had time to experiment, took me about 2 hours
