"There My Lady, isn't that a lovely dress your Father bought you foryour birthday."

"Yes it is. Did Father buy you your dress ?"

"I'm afraid not My Lady." the maid giggles, "We have to buy our own uniforms."

"Oh, can you afford that ?"

"Not at first my Lady. I just borrowed an old uniform from another maid so could only do the dirty jobs like lighting fires and so on, and you would never see me. Then as I saved money from my wages I could afford better uniforms and so did better jobs. And once I could afford this uniform, your Mother made me your personal maid."

"But you only wear nice uniforms now ?"

"Oh no My Lady. I wear a dirty uniform before you wake up, then change into my morning uniform to wake and dress you, take you to breakfast and so on. Then sometime in the afternoon, I change into this, my best uniform. But then back into an older uniform once you are asleep for my late evening chores, after which I come back here and sleep in your chair in case you need me during the night My Lady."

"Did your best uniform cost as much as my dress ?"

"Oh no My Lady. It cost about nine months of my wage. Your dress would cost about six years of my wage, possibly more."

"Well I think I have the best maid ever." the girl gives her maid a big hug.

"Thank you My Lady. But please don't do that in front of your Father or he will dismiss me."

"Okay." the girl grins, "Our secret."
