Description
a small pile of character designs I drew last month. It was mainly for a job application, but it never really got anywhere.Constructive critique would be appreciated so I can improve. : )
Also, yes, that guy down in the corner looks way too much like Harry Patridge.

I'd like to start by saying that there's nothing wrong with the actual designs themselves. They're all very cartoony and each shows a lot of character. They all stand out from each other and one can easily tell what there personality's would be like. My personal favorites are the first one because he's so detailed, the detective because I feel he gives off the most character and the little girl because she is adorable! One bit of criticism I would make is that the styles seem a bit too all over the place. Some are very cartoony and stylized while others seem to be a bit more realistic. Some just seem out of place with some of the others. If they're not all meant to go together then that's fine but if they were all in a cartoon the guy on the bottom right would look weird next to the big unnatural muscle mass superhero to his right is all I'm saying. Overall I do feel that these are some very good designs and I'd love to see more like them in the future.

I did try to do a bit of everything But putting them more orderly or at least in some sort of "seperate boxes" would make it a little less chaotic.
Thank you very much!

Dude, these are amazing! These are totally the kind of designs I would see in a "How To" book!
To be honest, I don't really know what to critique on. Your characters all look different and uniquely stylised, and most of them have clear personalities.
The ballerina pose at the top is excellent! If anything, you could do more characters like this; in dynamic, fluid poses. That might land you a job.
Actually, I can think of one awesome tip I just learned from a book called Character Mentor (heavily advise you check it out by the way).
That tip was to add a head tilt to your standing poses. It may not sound like much, but you'd surprised how just a little tilt of the head can add so much more character and even personality.
Take the superhero in the bottom row for example. If you tilt his head a jab forward, with his chest still puffed out, it may make him look even more superior.
But other than that, I am impressed with these! Keep it up! ^^

I can definitely see what you mean, movement or little adjustments like that can really add a ton! I'll be checking out that Character Mentor when I can get my hands on it.
Thank you very much!

My Favorite is definitely the obviously evil fellow in the top row.

I think I can see where this might have let you down. Would this make sense to you if I said I didn't see your personality in this artwork? You've got the talent, you'll find the place!

my personality? I'm a little lost, but I might have a little hint of what you mean...
Thanks!

You're already well on the way to a distinctive style that no one will mistake, which is really what I mean.
...As a writer saying what I mean can be a challenge too.

I can't do these. I always end making personalities for each off them XD
Anyways, good work. I'm digging the creepy dude on the top.

A bit more expression could help. Most of the characters seem to be frowning or poker-faced. And have them move a bit like the girl on the top right. Action is more interesting to look at then just standing.

Noted! Thank you I they they all seemed a little boring too, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Honestly I love all these designs. Your facial work really gives them depth of character and are interesting to look at. Your body types also vary mostly on the males since the feamles vary but it's due to their age. The only thing I can recommend is maybe try different female body types for the same age, not as in it being bad there is a lack of different types but only because it will help build your portfolio. Also my one main idea is change the wardrobe. Your clothes are very well done and really work well on the body, but they feel a bit safe. Even with the ones that arent shirt+jeans could use some fun to them. Give the grandma some really timely looking clothes, give the bully looking kid some more punk/mooche clothes, give some accessories to help define their character, like the kid could have band aids because she is wreckless and active, or if she is a trouble maker and secretive with her hands behind her back, have her have a more "fake casual" pose and a angelic look like she has something to hide. Whatever you want just maybe try to pull more of their character out for us to see. You did well to show your style with different bodies/faces etc, now bring out more personality and things to make us wonder "Why does this character carry this object/have this accessory" etc. Hope this all makes sense! This is something I need to do too since I wish to do more character work for my portfolio that is in desperate need of making lol. Best of luck and can't wait to see more!

This made a whole lotta sense! Thank you so much for the feedback! More female variations, clothe details to explain the characters better, it'll all be noted!
Thank you very much for taking the time to write all this, it's dearly appreciated.

I like the first one.
That's aweomse how you're able to draw characters so different, unlike Pixar

I really like these. I am a 3D artist and would like to make a model using one of these as a reference. The one I am interested in is second in the from the left, on the bottom. (Backwards baseball cap)
Would I have your permission to do this?
Also, have you any other viewpoints of that particular character?

Absolutely, feel free to!
I sadly don't have any other viewpoints of the character other than what you see here.
( his other hand is not visible because I forgot to draw it in behind him. )

I love the way these look! A little bit of feedback though, most of your standing characters have a slouch, perhaps you should straighten some of them out?

How'd these not get you anything? These are really good! Man, that sucks. I'm a huge fan of cartoonish proportions, and these look like something out of some classic cartoons I used to watch on CN and Boomerang.
