Description This is kind of a labor of love for me. I Recently read Grant Morrison and Frank Quitetly's All star Superman. I loved it because it reminded me why I love Superman and why he is unique. So it inspired me to come up with this picture of Allstar Superman fighting his many "clones" or "odes" however you want to look at it. The name speaks for it self. However I do love all the characters in this picture but there is only one Superman.

You should have Gladiator instead of Sentry on that picture.

Sentry is not a Superman-ripoff, even though there are few similarities (like the Watchtower / Fortress of Solitude and the Watchdog / Krypto). He has far more powers and his origin and his career are very similar to the Miracleman.
Gladiator shares much more similarities to Superman, like the exact same powerset and the weaknesses.

It's okay I just mentioned that Sentry is not a Superman-ripoff. Or at least not as seriously like the others are, since he is based on the Miracleman.
And when you denied it, I corrected you again, so it's all cool!

Mickezilla In reply to imperfectica [2011-09-26 05:13:03 +0000 UTC]

And I disagreed on good grounds. Mainly the fact that you are incorrect. All you did was posit that "Sentry is not a Superman-ripoff" and provided no reasons to believe it was true.

But since you like wandering off cliffs...

"Marvel's The Sentry is essentially Marvel's Superman equivalent. (Part of his backstory is that he was supposedly created in the '60s, but was powerful enough that he actually made his writers and readers forget he existed.) At the moment, in both powers and personality, he's changed enough to be different from Superman, if only by being Ax Crazy, and handled in (sometimes) interesting ways." - tvtropes.org

You know. Paul Jenkins the Damn creator of the character?!?!?

Moreover, if Sentry is as you say a Miricleman ripoff then I'm still right. Miricleman aka Marvelman is a Captain Marvel ripoff which in turn is a Superman ripoff. The Sentry would be a Superman ripoff three times removed given your theory. lol

Now that you've been properly schooled go away before I block you.

imperfectica In reply to Mickezilla [2011-09-26 05:43:23 +0000 UTC]

You should trust the biggest Sentry-fan outthere (me) more then other idiots, who don't have a clue about the character.
Paul Jenkins is a different story. He had slightly Superman in mind, but he turned Sentry into much more later on.

Here are Sentry's similarities with Superman:
- Has an "S" as his symbol ...
- Has his "Watchtower" (just like Superman's Fortress of Solitude) and his "Watchdog" (Superman's Krypto)
- Has superspeed, superstrenght, supersenses, flight and can absorb solar radiation ...
But there are also differences in the powerset:
- He is only nigh-invulnerable, since his main defence are a rapid healing and the ability to return from the dead ...
- He has far, far, far more powers like telepathy, healing, resurrection, he can absorb all kinds of energies, not only solar radiation, he can create forcefields, manipulate the matter and much more ...

- He also doesn't have any weaknesses like magic or weird stones (Hi @ Gladiator) ...
- He is also not an alien (Hi @ Gladiator), but just a regular human, who gained the power ...
- He is a much deeper character, because of his mental problems and the Void ...

As you can see, there is not really much what can turn him into a Superman-ripoff, but ... what about his similarities with the Miracleman?
I'm pretty sure that it wasn't a coincidence that Jenkins wrote Sentry how he did it in Sentry's first two volumes ... He had Miracleman in mind, that's for sure and here are their similarities:

- In their introduction, they were both middleaged, fat losers, who started remembering their past lifes as heroes so they went out to search for answers ...
- No one else was able to remember that time back ...
- After a while they both turned back into their superhero alter egos: tall, muscular, short, blonde hair ...
- Just like the Miracle Man Sentry also had forcefields, all kinds of energy blasts and stuff like that ...
- They both had their young, sidekicks, who were very similar to them ...

- With them a dark entity returned, who started threating everyone, and especially their wifes, to piss off the heroes ... For Sentry it was the Void, for Miracleman it was Kid Miracleman ... Void and Kid Miracleman were flying around, had their tendrils and insisted fear into the hearts of their enemies ...
- They battled against each other dramatically:
... when Kid Miracleman lost the war, he turned back into a child and begged to be stopped. Miracleman had to kill him.
... when the Void lost the battle, he turned back into Robert Reynolds and begged to be stopped. The Avengers had to kill him.

And yeah, Miracleman is of course based on Captain Marvel, but mainly because of their magic words ... Shazam, Kimota - the wizard crap ...
But, in my opinion Miracle is also a much deeper and far more complex character then Captain Marvel is, just like Sentry is more complex then Superman. But that's not Cap's and Supes fault - it's the way DC characters are written and I'm okay with that.

It still doesn't change the fact that Sentry has far more similarities with the Miracleman then Superman, and if you took time to read my post, where I explained it, you should actually have to agree.
The entire idea behind the character and the story are making him more based on Miracleman, then the "S" on his stomach and the few similar powers (which so many other heroes have, like for example Wonder Woman) to Superman.

Have a nice day.

Opinion on personalities....
Sentry is interesting, but due to his multiple-personality problems, he's almost useless as a superhero (since half is time spent being the world's greatest villain).
Omni-Man is kinda a dick. 'Nuff said.
Supreme: Depends on the version. Interesting guy.
Apollo: I'm fine with him. Supposedly he's based on The Ray, but he really is more like Superman.
Captain Marvel: Wanna-be.
Hyperion: I think he's very... interesting. In some ways, he better fits the name Superman than Superman himself does, simply because he better fits the philosophical concept upon which Superman is based. He realizes that he is more powerful than any human and privately believes he's better. However, his complicated morality system (which is notably different from the one most humans like to say they have) keeps him in check. As well as Nighthawk being ready to punch his lights out. He seems to have the POTENTIAL to be just like Superman, if he can live up to it.

Superman: Over-hyped at times, I think that his character has gotten blander over the years. However, he is the very model of every superhero (seriously) and does deserves some credit for that. In many ways, I feel that writers foolishly gave him more powers in order to stay ahead of every other superhero power-wise, but failed to realize that it was unnecessary. In fact, I wish DC would either do an animated movie or at least a comic where they had Superman with his original powerset (speed, strength, toughness, leaping, and heightened senses. That was seriously it. He wasn't even as nigh-invulnerable as he currently is. Artillery shots could still seriously wound him), modern day OR period. Because Superman doesn't NEED to fire lasers from his eyes. He's Superman.

Thoughtful comment.

That's All Star Superman not Regular continuity Superman and a cartoon has just been released.

That is in my humble opinion the greatest and truest understanding of the character.

πŸ‘: 0 ⏩: 1

Kerevon In reply to Mickezilla [2011-03-06 20:31:59 +0000 UTC]

Ummm... actually, he was even MORE powerful in All-Star Superman, at least he was midway through. But yes, both the movie and comic version of All-Star Superman provided the greatest understanding of Superman's character. He's a hero not because he's powerful, but because he's always trying to make the world better. Even when he's about to die due to Lex, he tells Lex to do better with his life. To make the world a better place. I especially love the line, 'If you really cared about saving the world, you'd have done it a long time ago.' Which challenged Lex to actually do it, giving a geneticist the ability to improve human evolution by making all humans Supermen. I just love that part, as it addresses two things: Superman tried to make Lex be a better person, even at the end of his own life, and that the reason Lex Luthor is such a great villain is the he COULD have been the true Superman.

Look at it like this: Lex Luthor was rich, powerful, well-connected, and highly intelligent. He was able to create great achievements in the fields of genetics, he had great political power, was a robotics expert, was an excellent physicist, and was very rich. If he TRULY wanted to help the world, he could have practically saved the planet. His name would have gone down in history as humanity's savior, and the world would have been better. He would have been a true 'Uber-Menschen, a Super-Man.' Instead, a farmboy from Kansas with some nifty superpowers was left to do the job that Lex Luthor could have accomplished in a relatively short time. In fact, Lex actively impeded his progress. What makes the Lex/Superman rivalry so much greater is that Clark knows that Lex, if he had actually cared, could have been a MUCH better Superman than Clark. But he didn't, so Clark was left to be the great and noble hero. Again, this just makes Superman more awesome.
