Biosphere Alpha - Koroa DropaHi guys,
starting my next series of extraterrestrial pics. This time i'll show you the biospheres of habital planets in the milky way.
I've already explained everything about the desert planet Koroa Dropa and it's intelligent race here: [link]
So, let's say something about the creatures!
Inaki - the top predator of Koroa Dropa. It's a canyon-dweller which allures its prey by pheromones. It shoots its sting into the prey and exhausts it. Thats possible cause all creatures of the planet have a higher water concentration in their body and are delimited from the high temperatures by a thick exo-skeleton. So, it's like exhausting a coconut with jelly milk inside. Delicious! BTW this creature seems to be bigger than it is - the canyon is quite small and at the beginning of it's emergence. Another pic of the Inaki you can see here: [link]
Joa - a succesful desert plant. It filters water steam from the morning air by a sponge-like structure at it's bottom. This structure is quite similar to the bottom of a coral and consists of almost dead material. Only a few water cores connect it with the round plant body at the top.
Morym - another desert plant. Very nutritious and important for the natives. Only findable at little lakes or subterranean springs. The native Dropa have raised them, so they became the major food source.
Zakata - a small scavanger and a relative of the Inaki. It fills the niche of vultures and hyenas, but can although catch prey on it's own with it's poisonous sting.
Hoanok - a really big animal and the favourite prey of the Inaki. The Hoanok browses through the desert sand and filters all kind of little creatures, microorganisms and water drops which live in the upper layers of the sand.
Joaki - a smaller relative of the Hoanok. To protect itself against the attacks of Inaki and Zakata it has evolved a round green body structure - so it mimes perfectly the bulb of a Joa-tree. A really neat example for mimicry.
That's it for this week. Hope you like biosphere alpha! It's a long way to go now - 14 other biospheres remain.
So, my favourite this time is the Hoanok. Which one do you prefer? Keep on watching, please comment and see you next week on Biosphere Beta!!

Amazing art=work and I can tell you have some imagination in your (Blue?) head. I am making my own biospheres in a mimic galaxy called the
Lac Ignorantia Juris Neminem Excusat (or just the Lac Ignor gallaxy) though I am new so I don't now how to upload hand-drawn art, may you help?

The Joa looks like a plant that'd thrive on the planet i'm building I'm wondering, can I use its basic design for a variation on one of my own plant designs? I was already working around floats and organs filled with photosynthetic algea and bacteria

well, of course you can use it, in science there is no copyright only convergent evolution...

thx for the comment!

Good. Very good indeed. A sting that looks like a screw... could it also be used to find water? Or am I just blabbing on again?

thx^^
seems to be obvious, that it finds water with it's sting, but like other desert animals it gets its water from it's prey!

I must accidently added that when the laptop was slow. Sanctuary is a sci fi series about people finding creatures we believed to be myths and legends or some we never imagined called "Abnormals" and bring them into places protection of both Abnormals and Humans

The Hoanok and Joaki are both cute, but I like the Inaki best.
I must ask, can the Inaki hunt and survive away from the canyons?

MickMcDee In reply to SpazzReflex [2011-06-14 16:53:01 +0000 UTC]
of course!
well, the thing with the canyon was designed to make it look more freaky or extraordinary - but the Inaki can hunt succesful away from the canyon too. good question, buddy^^
