Description Hi guys,

this is something i drew just for fun! Didn't really know what to draw and this was the first thing that came to my mind. Alien plants, why not? Used again a ball pen, but I think I overdid it a little with the detail . . .
Nevermind, the plants are called:

a. Wuestenstern (desert star), cause it adapted to a dry habitat and flouresces at night
b. Zepter der Semiramis (Semiramis' scepter), a swamp plant, that indicates really fructous areas
c. Fruehlingsdrache (spring dragon), something like a mangrove, that can move really slowly - its a relative of my "Wurzelfee", you can see it in my gallery at "Eating without digestion"
d. Hornfass (horn barrel), a sponge-like plant, that saves water in its body
e. Zweiblaettrige Hydra (two-leaved hydra), a carnivorous plant, the thorns are poisonous
f. Elefantenbein (elefant leg), although adapted to a dry habitat, its "skin" feels just like the skin of an elefant, thats where the name comes from
g. Schleimkuppel (slime dome), the dome adheres a thick slime filled with photosynthetic cells, that circulate inside the dome (the dome itself consists of lucent cellulose)
h. Todesodem (Death's breath), not really dangerous, but it stinks so extremely, that you feel like you're about to blanket, when you smell it
i. Schreckensfinger (fright finger), just looks frightening, its completely harmless, even its hinges dont have a function (all coincidental mutations . . . and fantasy)
j. Satansblatt (Satan's leave), although a carnivorous plant, similar to a stinging-nettle, but its nettles have a huge radius for attacking smaller animals (the victims will be digested by symbiotic mushrooms, which live inside the roots of the Satansblatt) - higher developed species of these can even control "catched" predators, which hunt smaller critters for the devilish plant 'til they die because of exhaustion

For some reason, I feel like drawing a symbiotic partner for the Zweiblaettrige Hydra, if you would give me permission to do so.

Your plants are so much better than mine. Then again, I was drawing them all evolving from an algae, so I could expect these to be more complex.

And I don't think you overdid the detail, it makes it look better!

(I don't want to repeat myself, but...)
What about the Zweiblaettrige Hydra? Can I make a symbiotic partner for it, please?

Reminds me of the herbology section of the Voynich manuscript.

The one the grabs my attention the most is C. You say it moves very slowly... Does it actually move each of the leg-tendils slowly over time through the earth? Or does it lift a tendril out of the earth, move it foreward, and then re-plant, like a "walk"?

I'm trying to imagine why a thing like this might evolve, because the possibilities are interesting. Perhaps it needs a certain nutrient from the ground that it uses up very quickly, so once a particular spot on the ground is "used up" it has to move to a different patch of dirt in order to get those nutrients? This might even suggest a chemical process that could underlie the movement: once the amount of the chemical available in the earth drops too low, the tendril / leg that is planted there has a chemical reaction that causes it to withdraw or pull up.

Sorry for kind of babbling... but the fact that your image brought all of these things to mind is a compliment. This plant really makes me want to learn more about the planet that made it!

hey, you seem to have a big knowledge in biology^^
i must admit, I haven't really thought about the way this plant moves, but your explanation sounds logical and really smart! Lets let it move like you imagined it

Thank you! I like getting caught up in details about alien creatures or planets and things. Sometimes it gets me into trouble... I get so excited about the biology or chemistry, it ends up being more exciting than the creatures themselves!

You have a great eye and style for drawing these types of sketches. Maybe some time, if I have some kind of biology idea, I can describe it to you and you can sketch it. It could be a fun collaboration.

plants! the aliens are plants! nice work, i can't say plants are easy to formulate

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MickMcDee In reply to THesla [2011-03-22 19:18:28 +0000 UTC]

i must admit it they were extremely easy to formulate, the first soft sketches only took 15 minutes (or less) - think it was the magic of a spontaneous moment
the problem is: plants are for most people not interesting (cause they dont move like animals) and so they dont give a shit on there design - even in science fiction movie!
Well, I'm a fan of Star Wars, but when I'm watching Return of the Jedi and they walk on Endor through a typical north american forest -(even if the computer techniques weren't as good as today)- that annoys me!
Lets be creative! Alien plants dont have to look like earth plants!

yeah, but when it comes to alien plants, some people like to show plants with eyes. i have this problem with alien plants, cuz different than animals, you don't have a half term, either the plant look totaly alien, or totaly real. and about star wars... well, it's a classic, and i respect it, but when i stop to see the logic behind it, it PAINS me.
