Description
I've been gravitating away from collage and more towards painting for awhile now. As I was working on "I Used to Live Here," I found myself pushing against the limitations of collage. My desire for softer forms and more nuanced color clashed with hard physical edge of the paper. Rather than fight that, I have switched my focus to painting. With paint, I had more freedom in how I manipulated my forms, and could push abstraction even further. This has been influenced by my interest in the psychology of vision. There's a space between seeing forms in the abstract and recognizing them. While I am still creating representational paintings, I am taking measures to make them harder to identify.
In this piece, I used a palette knife to apply the thick layers of paint to create a rich texture. I then used the knife and a rough brush to blush edges of the form. My choice to display the painting sideways was influenced by Georg Baselitz. The odd orientation makes the viewer take more time to find the figure, and it never quite settles.
