Description
I have been struggling with painting for a little while now. I had been working on another chess painting, but I struggled to find time to work on it. After a month of intermittent sessions, the painting was an overworked muddy mess. I knew I was just falling into a sunk cost fallacy and decided just to paint over it and try again later. The experience did reveal some weak areas in my technique. I decided for the next painting, I'd do something more straightforward. I set up a still life and painted from direct observation.
In this painting, I focused on mixing accurate colors, and how to make soft and hard edges. I also picked up some acrylic retarder and a sealable palette holder. This greatly extended the drying time of my paint, which allowed me to create a more cohesive palette between work sessions.
it's a small painting, but I learned a lot from it. Even though I'm feeling frustrated and uninspired, it kept me painting. It was a good reminder that there's nothing wrong with going back to basics.
