Derpy Review #92: Megaman Battle Network 4 (Blue Moon specifically) and Chip Challenge (kind of review) (Had to split the review into two parts, also, spoilers, obviously)
(Part 2 of the review)
Ending:
Micro: Alright, after winning the third goddamn tournament in the row, it turns out the last one was actually having more relevancy to this game pathetic attempt of a plot with the asteroid with Naxa wanting the winner to tackle the asteroid, again, why the hell didn't any of you idiots just go to Lan and Hub since these chucklef$%ks save the planet three f$%king times is beyond me but let's move on. The reason why the scientist wanted net battler is because Regal discovered that the asteroid isn't just some giant hunk of rock hurling towards the planet, but is in fact some man-made thing from outer space and it has a cyberspace of its own, which means a navi can go in there and try to redirect the asteroid from smacking the planet. That is if it wasn't for some bull crap filler stuff where Regal more or less reveal himself to be the leader of Nebula, shocker I know, and he sends Laserman to try to control the asteroid while Megaman is giving chase in this finale dunoen, which of course has a gimmick with awful instructions.
Scale: You have to do some panel puzzles of find the right ones in order, but also dealing with a black hole that tries to suck you up. What you are supposed to do that the game fail to make even a attempt of giving a hint at is mash the buttons to struggle until the black hole goes away and you can continue, else you get sent to the beginning of the stage. With that said, this place is thankfully short and not confusing and at the end, you finally confront Laserman, who is by far one of the most challenging bosses in the game to the point you'd be mistaken for thinking he could be a final boss if it wasn't for the fact he has standard navi health. His attacks are hard hitting and aggressive, and he can punch a hole on his side that not only heals him but practically makes him invulnerable until something breaks the hole. But with some good skills, Laserman is defeated and you can finally confront the real threat and final boss, D-Duo? Huh, surprised to actually see this guy again.
Shekra: Yeah, in no context or hint that Duo is the final boss, Duo is more or less what he is in Classic where he wants to destroy evil, except unlike in Classic, this version of Duo is an absolute idiot and views the planet as evil to be judge and sentence to be destroy, so of course we tell him no and fight him, but not before Duo decides to pull a Kingdom Heart out of nowhere and forcibly extract the Dark Soul this game is trying so desperately hard to say Megaman has just for using one single chip when we didn't use a single after the force mandatory one and we fight Dark Megaman. Dark Megaman is rather interesting, in that this is the closest we will get, at least until the Legacy collection comes out, to a multiplayer fight as Dark Megaman has almost exactly everything you have, buster strength the exact chip folder, and he moves around like a player, only thing I don't think he can do is Soul Unison. Still, Dark Megaman shouldn't be that hard to beat and so once beaten, we finally confront Duo... and oh God where to begin with this mess.
Micro: I know where to start, and the being that Duo is an absolute bastard of a boss and is hands down the worst boss in the series so far for the most bulls$%t way. Function almost like Alpha in the last game where he has one weak spot to hit, but unlike Alpha, he doesn't have any shields guarding it. No, instead, this lumbering giant prick will instead move up and down and make the weak spot annoying to hit and awkward as well as the hit box on Duo is awful, with this jackass having 2000 health. And if that wasn't bad enough, all of Duo's attacks are bulls$%t on their own where he can fire so many attacks at once where there are so little of room to move around that it becomes unfair a lot of times. He can fire missiles with little space and time to either move around them or blast on the spot, a weird bomb thing that goes up and down as it moves at your direction, a laser beam that is annoying to not get hit because the outer part of the laser can still hit you by expanding. And the real bulls$%t starts immediately in that Duo loves to use his to give you a root canal treatment by jamming his fist down your throat. He punches small part of the field, he can swing his punches multiple times with so little time to avoid his attacks, or he can go full out Fist of the North Star on your ass and punch your field many times with next to no room or time to even avoid a single punch all while some of the ground will break on the spot. Alpha was a difficult fight in the last game, but he was difficult and fun no matter what, Duo on the other hand,Β he's difficult for the wrong reason to the point he is unfair as you will die, die, and die a lot, and what really doesn't help that unless you are using the Navi customization to have extra health, which I strongly recommend doing as well as put air shoes in there as well, you will have a pathetic amount of health going again Duo no matter what, as in like 500 Hp, far less than previous game where you get at least 1000 hp if you look everywhere, and there's reason for why that's the case but we'll get to that bulls$%t later. Its because of these factor of facing with Duo that Duo is arguably the hardest final boss fight in the whole series according to the Battle network community, and I say arguably because there is another boss that is as hard either in the next game or in the last game, but from what I heard and maybe remember, that one is hard for the right reason, and I'm incline to believe it might be the last game but we'll have to wait in see.
Scale: There's no being nice about Duo, you are probably going to hate this guy and struggle so much against him, especially since a lot of chips just don't flat out work against this guy since he destroys two third of his side and that weak spot of his only stays open as long he isn't moving, which he will a lot. And beating doesn't feel great, it just feels exhausting with you saying, "About time" in the end. That said, Megaman beats Duo and with the power of friendship he turns the asteroid's direction away from Earth. Duo said he's impress and will leave Earth alone for who knows how long, hope you get implode by a sun, and flies off.
Micro: Which only leaves Regal who walks to the edge of the building with everyone trying to stop him so he can be arrested for his crime, only for this idiot to spout some reverse Steven Universe r%$$ded crap about his men failing because of Lan or something, hurry up and jump so I can piss on the air your body jump off already. Dips$%t leaves and the world is save, and that's literally it. Give. Me. A f$%king break already, Christ.
Shekra: While I can't say I enjoy this game's plot... or a lot of things, kind of glad we beaten the game... kind of... Yeah, time to address the elephant in the room. You might be reading this and wondering why we aren't sound nice to this game given that after what we just mentioned sounds about the standard length of the first game at least. And you'd be right in that assumption in that Megaman Battle Network 4 can be the shortest game to beat of the whole series.... if you only play one playthrough of the game. That's right, we purposely left out that real thing that everyone remembers this game for the most, and its the most annoying way to not only pad the game, but strict you of content. What we talked about in terms of story and navis we fought is only one third of the whole game.
Scale: Oh bolts, you got to be kidding me.
Bonus:
Micro: That's right, what we just talked about is only one third of the whole game, as the devs for whatever dumb reason decided to hide the other two thirds of the new in new game plus. New game plus is exactly what it sounds like, where you play the whole game again, except now you have to deal with harder enemies and tougher version of bosses, and there is so much stupid of this part that I swear that I didn't know the devs were working themselves to death working with Capcom, I would've thought they made this part to spite players looking for fun. New game plus is where you can start getting different versions of the harder enemies, even though you can fight some of them in the first playthrough, all key items are now gone and you if you missed anything in the previous play through that might have something special that you didn't get, well tough S$%t since you you better hope you get lucky to get another chance to that area, new game plus is where you can find more crystal that has upgrades such as more health that could've been nice to have in the first playthrough. One thing I should note about the crystals is that I did try looking this up and from what I read, if you did missed a upgrade crystal somewhere, its should be in the same spot while new game plus's stuff will be in different spots, but just in case, make sure to grab everything you can if you plan on completing this game. And if you do plan on completing this game, listen to what I say as this is important, please don't try to complete this game. The reason why I say this is because of the most bulls$%t thing we purposely left out up to this point as to what everyone remembers the most of what is so infamous part of the whole game. Remember every matches we told you in the plot section, every navis we said you can fight? Well, the reason I asking you this is because these were the fights we got lucky to get because whoever you fight in each tournament is almost completely random.
Scale: Oh good grief, where to begin. Alright, so to address that almost part, I tried looking up everything I can of this part but I almost got nothing except for a reddit thread where one person talks about it, so take this as a massive grain of salt from what I say now. At the start of each playthrough you do this game, there is a massive RNG base luck of which character you actually fight in this game, with the game having about 18 navis you can fight in total of both games, with six more navis who are generic with two being each tournament so that adds it up to 24, but remember that each version has exclusive navis as well and that being six exclusive navis that we mentioned already in each version. With that said, how this now works is that as soon as you start the game, the game as already decided which opponent you'll be fighting, and it can be completely random of who you fight. As such, there is a strong chance when you do a second playthrough, you are probably going to do another scenario with the same navi who you did their scenario in the previous playthrough, such as fighting the ghost girl again, which we should know cause that's exactly how it happened to us before Micro tosses the game over his shoulder. Now that said, while we say who you fight is completely random, we should now note what the reddit guy said that honestly, I'm hoping this is true just so there is a bit less of annoying program and the devs at least show they were more competent at thinking this game through. From what I understand, the game will decide already who you will fight in each playthrough, however, in each playthrough, navis that give you Soul Unison will always be different in that you will get a new one in each playthrough, however, there is a catch. The catch being that you will only get three souls in one playthrough, two in the next, and finally the last soul in the third playthrough, which sounds about right since every review we heard of this game long prior before playing this game always refer to that in order to get everything in the game, you need to play this game three times.
Shekra: And keep in mind that just one playthough of Battlenetwork, on the easiest one, can last to about ten hours only, and that not including on cleaning the whole game to make sure you got everything. We said that Battle Network 4 can be the shortest in the series if you are doing one playthrough, but if you try to get at least all the souls alone, Battle Network 4 can be the longest game to complete in the whole series. And the worst part is that you need to play the game three times as you won't be allow to go to the secret post game area of the game, Black Earth. But to get to Black Earth, you need to do a lot of requirements just to even go there. You need all the chips, all evil chips and beat Bass. After that, you go to Black Eart where you fight strong dark version of previous navis that give you souls, and then you finally fight the secret boss of the area, Dark Megaman where beating him gives you the Soul Clean and the Hub Patch program, but let's be honest at this point these things aren't worth getting, oh and after this fight you can randomly fight a harder version of Bass if you come back to this area. Needless to say, after the major headache of just one playthough of the game, we didn't even try to continue a second playthrough.
Micro: Again folks, I have patience, but I'm not patient to slog my through a second or even third playthrough this game especially when I was not having even that much fun with this particular game. As such, I rather continue with the next game.
Scale: ehm hmm, aren't you forgetting something?
Micro: Probably knowing my track record of forgetting to make note of every single thing happening in games.
Scale: No! You said you would show me what Aquaman looks like since you both were bent on not showing me him at all.
Shekra: Oh right, thanks for reminding me. Here you go, here's what he looks like.
Scale: Alright, so how stupid or horrifying looking did Capcom made Aquaman made in Battle Network..... Oh my God he's soooo cute I just want to hug him, he looks like a adorable plushie to cuddle against!
Shekra & Micro: *Snickering*
Scale: A..... You two better not show this to anyone or so help me I'll-
Shekra: Annnnnnd share~
Scale: NOOO-!
Ending:
Micro: Well, while Scale is screaming into a pillow of embaressment-
Scale: *Screaming into the void that is a pillow out of embaressment*
Micro: You're not going to let this go at all any time soon, are you?
Shekra: Nope, even got her a plushie of the little guy just to rub it in.
Micro: There's time I worry more of who crueler at people between you and me. Anyways, to say I didn't enjoy Megaman Battle Network 4 is a massive understatement. I find the game extremely tedious to play, annoying backtracking and has the worst padding I think I ever seen in a video game, and I'd played games that has done something similar to what Battle Network 4 try doing except vastly superior in every way of the concept of new game plus with the story being the same but something new happens, and Duo can rot in a volcanic pit at the bottom of hell for all I care. And the thing is that I'm no stranger to games that has some bad game design, just look at some games we talked about that a lot of people seem to not like or even hate yet I was perfectly ok with and even defended as well, and yet I could not be a contrarian for the general view of this game and honestly can say that Battle Network 4 is probably the worst in the series by far and the next two games have to really f$%k it up to be worse.
Shekra: And yet, despite the faults the game has, there are plenty of people who loves this game and will defend it. And I can see why people would defend the game, as there are some good stuff in the game, such as Soul Unison being honestly the best part of the game, even though you annoyingly need to play the game three times to get them. Still, this is something thatΒ I don't think Micro and I are ever going to play again, at least not until the Legacy collection comes out and we replay those games on our free time. As such, so far in this marathon, Micro and I agreed to give this game a bronze rank, while functionally the game works just as much as the last games, the questionable choices made for this game as well the lack of story this RPG has really drags the game down for us. Still, this is one game that while we didn't like it, its clear from what I looked up on the view of this one game alone that you are either going to like the game or hate it, there honestly not going to be a in between. As for Chip Challenge, we're giving it the Unknown rank, as we can't honestly give our whole honest view of how we would recommend this game given the whole simple game structure it has. If we go back to this game on our own, we might dedicate more hours into it, but this is one of those game that isn't for us but who knows, somebody might like this game enough to invest more time into it.
Micro: Battle Network 4, while giving me a migraine half of the time, was the one game I was most curious about and now that curiosity is satiated and toss off a cliff. That said, I'm still curious enough to try this game again when the Legacy collection comes out, mainly on what changes or a extra little thing the people working on the collection will do, given that in the previous games from what I remember, its been two years since I last play the recent collection that being the Zero and ZX Legacy collection, there is probably going to be something that might make the game easier or more bearable to play. That said, given some of the problems this game has, no wonder the Battle Network Legacy Collection has taken this long to come out. That said, Battle Network 4 is consider the very bottom of the series, and I can agreed there, as such, the next two games should be up hill from here as we should hopefully be back to games with a bit more quality checks. A such, the next game to look at will be Megaman Battle Network 5 Team Protoman, cause I didn't know until after buying this version that I screwed myself from playing the game that is consider actually the canon game of five. More on that later after we get Scale to stop screaming in embarrassment to focus on the last two reviews. Speaking of which, is the ostrich done hiding her head in the ground?
Shekra: Nope, still ducking her head in a pillow.
Micro: This is going to be a while. Anyways, hope you guys have a good day.
Micro & Shekra: Bye
Scale: *Still screaming into her pillow out of embarrassment*
