Description Technically it's not a willow, but I had to give it this title. This was my first time actually using india ink as a medium, so it's not the best painting in the world, but all things considered, I think it came out fairly well. No reference, done in approximately one hour from start to finish. I used pure india ink and a 10 round synthetic bristle watercolor brush, and for the very fine details a 0.7 pure liquid ink ballpoint pen. I didn't use water to dilute any ink for shadows, just a very dry brush. Please, if you have any constructive criticism, I would love to hear it! Thank you very much! Cheers!

Added note: since this was done on an 18x24" drawing pad, it was too big to scan. I had to tape it up on my wall and take a picture using my cellphone, so it's not the highest quality. If I can get a better picture during daylight, I'll upload that instead.

Yes, it is! Hahaha. I just dipped a brush in my ink pot and went at it. No water or diluting used in this piece. Thank you for the comment!

Earth shakes,
Stone breaks,
The forest is at your door.
The dark sleep is broken,
The woods have awoken,
The trees have hone to war.
Roots rend, wood bends,
The Ents have answered the call.
Through branches now the wind sings,
Feel the power of living things,
The trees have gone to war.

Sorry, I'm at the moment listening to the Two Towers soundtrack on my computer, and I just HAD to put this here. I know this isn't an Ent...but brilliant drawing nonetheless!

Thank you so much! This really means a lot to me! The Two Towers soundtrack is beautiful, isn't it? I'm reading The Silmarillion again, along with The Children of Hurin and The Lays of Beleriand, since I'm trying to brush up on my Tolkien. And who knows? Maybe this tree just needs to be woken up! Thanks again!

I'm reading The Hobbit! Don't you just love Tolkien's poetry?

If I had a TARDIS, I would travel back in time and have a nerdy discussion with him about the structure of Anglo-Saxon and Welsh poetry, or something of the like.

Or a Time Turner, hahaha! But yes, I so would too. I refused to sell back my textbook on Anglo-Saxon poetry after the semester ended last year, lol. I'm so selfish.

A good friend of mine gave me Seamus Heany's English translation of Beowulf (with the Anglo-Saxon included), and I read it during a brief visit to North America. It has been one of the best presents ever.

I love Beowulf. Like, seriously. Best poem ever. Where did you go visit?

I was mainly in Canada, and there I went to British Colombia and Newfoundland, a place which I love because it reminds me of Ireland. after that, I went into the US; Washington, Oregon and California. It was so bloody hot there!

Hahaha, yes. I've never been out west myself, and quite frankly I have no desire to go. Be thankful you've never been to Florida in the middle of summer.

I have a couple of relatives who moved to Florida and said the summers are brutal. Yes, I prefer the clammy dampness of Wales, although many people get sick of it.

Lol. The North is far better than the South, I have to admit. There are actually seasons up there. Although the winters can get to be quite awful. Ugh, snow...blah.

I like the snow myself. Here, it rains so much that snow never stays. It keeps the countryside green, though.

Green countrysides are awesome, lol. After ten straight snow days in a row, you get really tired of having to shovel yourself out of your door just to get to your car.

This was a CELLPHONE picture?! You must have some kinda crazy space phone or something, 'cause this looks fantastic. If anything, the dark shade of the picture as a whole adds to the feel of the painting, which is mellow but sophisticated.

Being that I'm better at drawing people and animals, I'm afraid I don't have much to critique in terms of landscapes and scenery. Judging just by this one picture, I imagine you must be quite skilled--also for the fact that you use other mediums besides just a simple pencil and paper.

Lol, yes. I wasn't happy with the way it was coming out in auto, so I switched the settings to macro and had to fiddle with the brightness since I don't have the best lighting in my room. Thank you very much! I really appreciate your comment. You just made my night! I never tried painting with india ink before, so this was really one big experiment for me. I'm going to try to do a painting every night though to become for familiar with it, so we'll see where it goes from here. Thanks again!

Yeah, practice makes perfect! That's actually something I really need to do more often--just draw and draw and write and keep going. I make a bad habit sometimes out of trying to perfect one piece of art instead of moving on.

My uncle once told me about an experiment a pottery teacher did in a pottery class. He assigned a project that separated the class into two groups: the people in the first group were graded on one pot that each of them had to make perfect. The people in the other group were graded on how many pots each person made. By the end of the semester, it turned out that the people who'd made many pots did better than the people who each only made one pot.

That's so cool. I'm trying to figure out what I'm going to paint next. Not quite sure what I'm going to do yet, but it's most likely going to be another landscape. I'm planning on minoring in art, so I'm going to need all the practice I can get!
