I used Manga Studio Debut 4.0. Backgrounds work in a mix of both references and just making them on the spot. Manga Studio has the feature "Import" where, if I just can't do the background from my mind/memory, I paste various backgrounds I find, trace out the parts I like, then adjust the rest to how I want it.
