São Joaquim, Brazil
The most experience photographer of the group, Miguel has been a photographer for over 15 years, starting with a film camera and then moving to digital five years later. With the goal of featuring the past, present, and future of Brazil in this project, he traveled to smaller and lesser-known cities to capture the beauty and the chaos withi
For the theme of Past, Present and Future, I went to a town that is in the transformation process to become a huge city. Laguna is an old fishing town and the streets still show its colonial history. As we're moving into the 21st century, the old town is dying. The old buildings are no longer usable. People forgot about them. Almost everything is for sale, to be demolished. History is in the photographs and paintings now, it's no longer real.

THE SHOOT
Laguna was one of three cities I visited for Capturing Change and I chose it because of it's old town center. I wanted to capture the Past and I wanted it to be in black and white and sort of timeless. No need for great old buildings, I wanted a plain old building in a plain old corner. This spot had it all.
I got on my knees and used the flip screen of the a7RII to get the low angle. I had to concentrate on getting the composition right, with a person in it, at the right moment. For that, I set the camera to zone auto-focus and aperture priority mode. Fortunately, the camera did its part and got me a nice shot, well focused and with a great dynamic range. I needed that because this would tell the story just by its composition but also by its color, or lack there of.

Yes, absolutely. That's the idea. I took hundreds of shots and will be back there in a few weeks for more.
It's my honor and privilege to make the dedication my friend. Cheers.

This reminds me of some parts of the south of Angola, where I lived for three years during my youth. Same architectural styles, same abandonment.

Well, maybe that's a Portuguese 'footprint' left in both countries... old colonial structures that just don't fit into modern life.

Yep, definitely! Also in Angola it is reminiscent of trade that doesn't exist any more because it didn't survive the collapse of colonialism (old warehouses, factories, etc).
