Description Teethers and Toothlings are same specie - one of many horrors that dwell near roots of alien spire of Nightmare Tree. Toothling - (little cute girl to the left) is child form of this creature, and looming Teether (a big awesome girl to the right) - is adult.

Interesting behavioral traits:

1. One or a few stray Toothlings are cautious and flighty critters prefer to run away from well-bodied armed people who invade their territory. But you meet dozen of them - RUN - for they'll come after you as a carpet of land piranhas!!

2. Usually pack comes into being when adult Teether/Mommy matriarch gives birth to little cute floofball and raises them.

3. Matriarch takes care about her little childrend but only to certain extent - it was observed that she specifically would not want to step on one of her kids even if that would give her advantage. But in the end, kids work for her comfort, not the other way around. During engagement she sends pack of kids forward to soften her opponent.

Sounds:

1. Novel mentions that Toothlings can hiss and squeal.

This is illustration for creatures Teether/Mommy (big one) and Toothling (small kid) for story www.royalroad.com/fiction/3930… "A fine octet of legs" by Rabid Muskrat.

Illustration is based on currently available information (as of chapter 42 Thunderstruck).

It was not in story, just my personal feelings about some ways this design works:

I decided to use Great White Shark style of teeth for this creature. I feel that creature should be able to fold them with movement of muscles.

As it works for shark, each individual tooth is a part of "conveyer" belt. First grows one tooth, then some time later first tooth shifts closer to edge of jaw and in it's place second tooth develops; then same with third and fourth... and at a certain point of time you'd have all 4 teeth there. When one of older teeth falls out, next one in the belt takes it's place. Individual tooth is easily replaceable.

I think that lost teeth of Teethers and Toothlings - they use it all the thime it's not big deal - might be used as resource by sapient monsters and civilized people.

This is a social creature, so I think it's face should be capable of producing different expressions.

I think it's vocalbox is more like bird's rather than like human's.

I think it's lower jaw has hairs that allow it great understading of what happens beneath it - a mix of tactile feel of air pressure and a bit of electromagnetic feeling.

I think it's fur should be awesome to the touch, but the most mofu-mofu one should be on the stomach.

I think Momma sleeps surrounded by a dogpile of kids, with a few naughy kids on top of her head. She tolerates them.

I still don't have a clue how males factor into the whole dinamic of reproduction. Or if there are any (perhaps all Teethers hermaphrodites?)

The heel of Teether actually has anatomy that resemples that of elephat's leg: there's a pillow of flesh there that cutions impacts of walking. Also it makes creature's steps quiet. Also it allows creature advantage to traverse through boggy terrain - like some types of swamp, mud, sand or snow.

Random thoughts about process of drawing this:

Amount of research on anatomy of real-life animal I did to make this is... woah. )))) Reading, watching photos and videos about great white shark, alligator, ostrich, T-Rex, African elephant, brown bear, wolf, leopard black panther. Then thinking about how bits and pieces could fit together. That was... quite a few days. Well, it was interesting though.

I had lots of opportunities with drawing different types of fur. Was interesting practice.

The whole project started 2021-09-24 05:52:54 +03:00 and was finished at 2021-10-07 19:20:40 +03:00. 13 days? But it was worth it ))
