Description
How I make my shields:1. Start with a thick (As thick as you want your shield to be) sheet of styrofoam. Draw your blueprint on it, cut it out and sand the sides.
2. Cut out the middle of the blueprint and trace the edges on the back of the shield.
3. Add some extra lines and number all the small pieces, so you can assemble it later on. (If you can cut out everything at once, you can skip this step)
4. Start sanding. Add a little more sanding, followed by some more sanding, until you have the desired shape.
5. Do more sanding, add lines to help guide the curves of the shield. When you're satisfied, use a high grit sandpaper to refine everything. Keep adding the lines to help you on your way.
6. In the meantime, also make the back of the shield. This is made out of two layers of wood, including 4 holes for the handles and such.
7. Remember those lines and numbers on the back? This is the time to use them. Turn the shield and cut out al pieces. Congrats! You have a jigsaw puzzle! grin-emoticon
Sand down the middle piece until you're satisfied with the shape.
8. Reassemble all pieces on the back of the shield. Glue them down and wait till dry.
**** TIP: To prevent you from having to spend a lot of time reshaping your shield later on when adding bondo, you should try to saw out the pieces as straight and neat as you can. Mine had some crooked lines (didn't use the correct saw ^^'), so I already spent some time on reshaping after the worbla (I'll address that in a later progress step!) went on it. ****
