Hi everybody! Don't worry, the second to last episode of ET S3 will be coming soon, but I wanted to try something a little different, and it's really a promotional advertisement for my good friend CrovanWorks, as you see, very soon, he'll be doing a discussion, a Sodor's Battles on the dynamics Thomas has, a good one with James and a bad one with Diesel. I can't to see that one, but I decided to help promote it with a poster of my own, and because this interaction is one of my all time favorites in the Thomas franchise, the relationship between Thomas the Tank Engine & James the Red Engine. I would do for Thomas & Diesel, but I don't intend for the simple reason, I hate that dynamic, like I really do, because I wanted to see Thomas face off against Diesel as a kid, yes, but how it was handled in execution, I can't stand it, especially because this was something HIT & Mattel created because of stupid statistics, it's just the stupid main protagonist vs main antagonist cliché, and ARGH, I just can't stand it so much. Especially since, and too Mattel and all you Brenner followers, Diesel's main rival is supposed to be...DUCK!!! AND ONLY DUCK!!! But I think I made my point clear enough, so like I did with the Percy & Duck poster early this year, I decided to do my own poster showing how much I love the Thomas & James dynamic.

Now the reason I love Thomas & James's chemistry and why I titled it the way I did was because I like it when a show, movie or even video game franchise always had two of their main characters pair up as rivals, in this, a blue character and a red character. And the way these characters are written also play a significant role in that factor, as usually the blue characters are shown as the do-gooders, the serious ones that depending on what you watch are at time prideful, but for the most part are kind, honorable, soft, diplomatic, the one with the sense of justice. The red characters are more petty and far more prideful than blue, and always think they can challenge themselves, the more stubborn, the more passionate, but it doesn't mean they have a good hearted side. As these colors represent these traits in real life, as blue, my favorite color and the one I'd be on the most, is more pure, responsible, noble and while occasional prideful and stubborn, is the more moral one that fights for what's right, whilst red is more passionate, prone to anger, prideful, challenging, impulsive, stubborn, but does have that sense of goodness and will eventually learn when to do the right thing. And in a nutshell, that's Thomas & James's relationships. Now I know theUnluckyTug described them as bringing out the worst in each other, to be honest, I only agree to some extent, as yeah they maybe similar in a lot of ways, mostly in the RWS, but the model era, where these two are fleshed out and I should mention interact more here, seem to fit that bill of what I just mentioned above, especially since Thomas himself grew over the first 5 seasons, whilst James didn't have much of a journey, but remained consistent and at least he did have some character development. Note how I only have pictures from the model era as given Awdry was only focused on certain characters, there really weren't as many stories with these two together in the RWS, the CGI was okay if I'm honest, as I like how they did show Thomas & James's dynamic, especially in moments when they were in character, but given the vast amount of flanderizations, out of character moments from Thomas, the mean-spirited and cringy writing from the Brenner era, and the fact both Thomas and James are given way too much screen time because of this stupid status quo BS, it feels to overused I admit. The model series, which of course is the best versions of both these characters. As Thomas being the do-gooder (And not a goodie two shoes, take a hint Mattel) and James being the more flawed, these two pair up very well and it's at a perfect balance. And while maybe sometimes they may bring out the worst in each other and have similarities to an extent, they couldn't have been more different, and Thomas is more the straight man who can get annoyed with James and does try to talk sense into him like Edward, whilst James would at times get annoyed by Thomas, it feels he actually sees the little blue tank engine as a friend more. They do seem to get along for the most part and always help each other out. I especially love those moments in S5's James and the Trouble with Trees and Make Someone Happy were despite some instances were they're rivals, they're friendship with each other is shown and they always got each others backs. If anything, these two do feel like brothers.

In fact, in my series Engines Together, after Crovan and I were talking, it got me thinking, given how much page-time (My equivalent to screen time) these two have, and how Thomas is the main character of ET and is the wise, optimistic and pure straight man from S5, who gets more involved in the adventurous and philosophical themes, and James who may not have had a journey throughout the franchise in all eras, but still remained very consistent, but here is now the breakout character of my series, these two are the main duo, as well as main trio with Percy, and have been seen in a handful of episodes, have interacted with every character introduced throughout the 3 seasons and movie I've done so far, and with each other, have a very well-balanced chemistry. Plus, they fit the bill of what I mentioned above of the classic blue and red duo and what each color represents. These two are both the equivalents to each other pairing that fits this noble blue and petty red trope, such as Leonardo & Raphael from TMNT, Sonic & Knuckles, Superman & Batman, Captain America & Iron Man, Lee and Carter from the Rush Hour trilogy, every dynamic where its the serious, rule follower and petty, but good-hearted jerk pairing up. I just enjoy pairing these two up and their brotherly bond with each other.

Not to mention these are the two that do through the most adventures and development, especially James given he's the breakout character, and these two have got their own love interests that also play into their arcs with Thomas pairing up with Emily and James pairing up with Tamara, and how their relationships with their girlfriends play of with each other, especially because in contrast to Thomas & James's brotherly bond, Emily & Tamara have a strong little sister and big sister bond, but we'll get to that in like another poster, as well as another one with Thomas, James, Emily and Tamara together. So as far as I'm concerned, these two are the main duo in this ensemble cast. They argue sometimes, but are really each other's best friends. And even though despite having James being close with Donald & Douglas, and for now, he and Tamara are the best of friends, I always wonder, who is James's actual best friend, as it can't be Gordon & Henry, as James feels he's in Gordon's shadow and the big blue engine belittles him. And he and Henry have more of a love-hate relationship and always try and one up each other. Plus, with the other engines, he and Percy also have a love-hate relationship and compete with each other constantly, he and Toby don't get along as much, due to James's constant arrogance, prompting Toby to take him down a peg, he always has disagreements with Duck, but after SS and S3, I guess you could see they've improved a bit, and the fact James also was at odds with Oliver in the AETUA 2-parter. And whilst he and Edward have gotten along over the years now, and do respect each other, James can still be pretty difficult. Oh who am I kidding, despite the fact he is friends with everyone, the most of the other engines just seem to tolerate the red mogul. And any newcomers he always seems to be rude to, to put himself on top, until Tamara came along and that ended that aspect of James's life. It seems like now Thomas, the blue guy that's matured the most and is friends with every engine on Sodor, James looks at Thomas as the best friend he never had. And Thomas does feel more like an older brother to James. Though it seems more James is dependent on Thomas, as the blue engine it seems is always like bailing him out. Despite the fact they can argue sometimes, their relationship is more genuine, as these two really do care about each other the most, and honestly, are more best friends. So despite being close with Donald and Douglas, equal partners with Edward, a big brother to Emily, an interesting dynamic with Arthur, and best friends and later love interest with Tamara, Thomas really feels more like the best friend James ever had, and Thomas in return always cares for and makes sure to support and stand up for James when he need him the most. In fact, my adaptation of Make Someone Happy is my favorite S1 episode and one of my favorites I've written for one of these exact reasons. And honestly, I'm happy to make the main duo, as if the RWS can have, to me, Gordon & Henry as their main duo, Thomas & Percy in the actual show, which I admit is a little too cliché now, Thomas the Tank Engine & James the Red Engine are the main duo of Engines Together, and are the true examples of the Classic Blue & Red.
