Description
Hey guys,So recently I've been working on an eat3d tutorial teaching people how to get hard surface results similar to that of a traditional 3d package. It was just released so I figured I'd upload it.
You can find the tutorial here:
[link]
The tutorial covers a bit of the concepting, reworking, sculpting the final model, rendering with Vray, and compositing in Photoshop.
As for the design, I was very inspired by the Marine and the Firebat from Starcraft 2. I enjoyed that game a lot and loved the designs so i wanted to achieve something similar. Also I was trying to focus on maneuverability of the character it self. I wanted to create a mech that would have as little self collision as possible.
The programs I used for this were:
Zbrush - For the model and sculpting
3ds max with Vray - For rendering passes
Photoshop - For compositing
Also the DVD covers a bit of compositing to show you the basics of how to achieve a final image like this.
Anyways, please enjoy and I hope you like it!
Edit: Daily Deviation!!! Oh my god thank you so much to ^artofkerem for featuring it!!! Thanks to all those who favorited and commented on it. It means so much to me

my critique is even if the paint looks verry used/worn the coat over it is shiny new... looks a bit awkward
but damn this is awesome!

You're right the scuffing is off. I still need to improve my technique on it. Because it's done in render passes, the effect is lost in some places. Gotta work on a way around it XD. Thanks! <3

I love it, I know its nessesary to see the detail, i just wish it were an off the line model, no scratches no battle damage etc. clean freshly manufactured

Thanks man! The very basic render of the clean model looks pretty bad, it needed a ton of refinement to make it look not bad XD. But a good version of a clean one would be cool!

Great one, the scratches make it more real.
It reminds me of an old metal toy after a long life in the hands of a kid.

I can see the influences from SC2. A very sharp presentation, regardless.

How good do you have to be in order to benefit and learn from the DVD? Do you have to be moderate in Zbrush, or can it also be understood for an amataur like me, who pretty much only knows how to make simple shapes and the main elements in the user interface.
Because I'm really into hard-surface / flat surface design, and I drool looking at this. Too bad I have to hand in my portfolio the 15th of march so I won't make it having some Zbrush in it - tho I'd love to, since I would really like to master this awesome software.

Hey dude,
For the DVD I think you should at least be comfortable with zbrush's interface. I don't go over much of the basic interface stuff, but if you are comfortable navigating zbrush and you have some sculpting experience with it then I think it can be helpful.
Thanks XD

Thanks a lot for responding. I'll definetly try it out. The study I am currently applying for, is mainly focused on Maya, but it will be great to do Zbrush as well - and especially to do hard-surface in it as well, since I havent seen many people doing this sucessfully
Good luck with your work, and thanks a lot for sharing.
