Description Hey guys,

So recently I've been working on an eat3d tutorial teaching people how to get hard surface results similar to that of a traditional 3d package. It was just released so I figured I'd upload it.

You can find the tutorial here:

[link]

The tutorial covers a bit of the concepting, reworking, sculpting the final model, rendering with Vray, and compositing in Photoshop.

As for the design, I was very inspired by the Marine and the Firebat from Starcraft 2. I enjoyed that game a lot and loved the designs so i wanted to achieve something similar. Also I was trying to focus on maneuverability of the character it self. I wanted to create a mech that would have as little self collision as possible.

The programs I used for this were:

Zbrush - For the model and sculpting
3ds max with Vray - For rendering passes
Photoshop - For compositing

Also the DVD covers a bit of compositing to show you the basics of how to achieve a final image like this.

Anyways, please enjoy and I hope you like it!

Edit: Daily Deviation!!! Oh my god thank you so much to ^artofkerem for featuring it!!! Thanks to all those who favorited and commented on it. It means so much to me . I'll reply to the comments when I get a moment.THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

I got your 3DTotal tutorial and the Zen of Brush book, but this seems to be the ultimate version of your hard surface tutorials

The only thing I'm not so sure about is the wear. It looks great on itself, but something is strange about it if you look at the whole figure.

MikeJensen In reply to aerilworks [2011-03-23 23:41:05 +0000 UTC]

Haha thanks! Yes this process is a bit more advanced and different than the others. You're right about the wear and tear something is off. I still have to improve upon it XD.

awesome work dude,
i thought it would be an real mech, too. ^^

why aren't the big gaming-studios like ea, activision & co
able to do something real-looking like that?!

how long have you been working on that?!

cheerz,
the axl ^__°

Ulysses-31 In reply to d0pecr4wler [2011-04-13 03:03:02 +0000 UTC]

Actually, there's a feature called hardware tesselation which does indeed support huge polygon counts by sub-dividing the mesh in real time, but since this was made in z-brush, and I don't think z-brush supports Catmull-Clarke sub-division, you wouldn't end up with a neat result. A far more efficient, traditional modelling method would be required.

MikeJensen In reply to d0pecr4wler [2011-03-23 23:41:45 +0000 UTC]

Thanks man! Haha I think this is far too high resolution games are bottle necked by their polygon count and texture resolution allowances XD

Yusuko In reply to d0pecr4wler [2011-02-24 20:23:42 +0000 UTC]

Because there is no hardware on earth that could possible support those kind of graphics in-game

sorry for the poor english...

Thanks a ton! Haha yeah the important thing to remember is that most 3d packages can achieve the same thing! The important thing is the person using the tool But I prefer 3ds max just cause i'm used to it. Good luck with your 3d en endeavors!
