This is the story of a little tank engine who helped pull a little train of cars filled with toys over a huge mountain. It began early one morning at a quaint little house where a young rabbit was reading a book. Her friend, a orange fox with two tails, came in to the room. He is spending the night at the rabbit's house with the permission of her mother.

Fox: Hey Cream, what are reading?

Cream: Oh, Hi, Tails. I'm just reading about the little engine and the train of cars full of toy it brings. It's a birthday train and tomorrow's my birthday.

Tails: A birthday train full of toys? I can't believe you really believe that.

Cream: Of course I do, it'll come.

Tails: I'm not being a jerk, I'm just saying that there's not going to be any little engines nor birthday trains coming here.

Cream: It will come. I know it will. I know it will.

Now the town that Cream lived is at the foot of a large mountain. On the other side lay a small railway yard with the roundhouse. In charge of the yard is a short stout man dressed in a black suit with gray trousers, a yellow waist coat, a black tie and a top hat. His name is Sir Bertram Topham Hatt, also known as "The Fat Controller." When he's not in charge, a control tower with a large horn named Cranky Neil takes over. On that day, Cranky Neil is waking up from a good night's sleep as Sir Topham Hatt arrived.

Cranky Neil: (yawning) Good morning, sir.

Sir Topham Hatt: No time to waste, Neil. There's work to do. Sound your horn.

Cranky Neil: (realizing) Yes sir!

He lets out a loud "AUUUGAH" from his horn to try to wake up the sleeping engines inside the roundhouse. The first engine is a yellow 4-4-0 steam engine named Molly. The second is a blue steam locomotive named Edward who also has a 4-4-0 wheel arrangement and is chuffing in his sleep. The third engine is a red 2-6-0 engine named James who seems to be coughing smoke. The fourth engine is a large 4-6-2 engine named Gordon. The fifth engine is a small tank engine with 6 small drive wheels, a short stumpy boiler, a short stumpy dome, and a short stumpy funnel. The engine's name is Thomas, and on his headlamp is a small blue Flicky named Flynn. Thomas is the first to wake up and cheekily lets out a shrill whistle which causes Flynn to jump up in surprise.

Thomas: Wake up, lazy feathers.

Flynn: Don't do that, Thomas. I didn't get a wink of sleep last night.

Thomas: Have you been eating those green worms again, Flynn?

Flynn: Guilty as charged.

Thomas: Don't worry, a little work will get you going.

Thomas chuffed up to the turntable and then turns to where Gordon is and couples up to him.

Thomas: Come on, Gordon.

Gordon: (waking up) Refined engines like myself should never get up this early. It's bad for our chug.

Thomas: That's ridiculous, Gordon. You're just being lazy.

Gordon: And what would you know about it? You're just a little shunting tank engine, shunting cars and moving real engines around the train yard.

Thomas: What do you mean "Real" engines?

Cranky Neil: (angrily) Stop that squabbling, we can't waste a minute!

Gordon: What is the assignment that I should do incredibly well?

Sir Topham Hatt: Your job today is to take that express train over the mountain and to the town.

Sir Topham Hatt points to the green express cars at a siding.

Gordon: Consider the task done.

Cranky Neil: Keep 'em rolling, Thomas.

Next Thomas couples up to James who just coughed out some smoke.

Thomas: Come on, James.

James: Be careful, don't bust a buffer.

Thomas: (scoffs) Are you kiddin'? Hold on to your smoke box!

Thomas began to accelerate towards Sir Topham Hatt and Cranky Neil as Flynn looked in surprise.

Flynn: Thomas is sure fired up this morning.

When Thomas is uncoupled to James, the red engine began to cough, sending black smoke everywhere. This causes Cranky Neil to sneeze and Sir Topham Hat to cover his face.

Cranky Neil: For pete's sake, James, watch that smoke.

James: I know. It must be the bad coal from last night. So where to today?

Cranky Neil: See, that freight train? Take it over the mountain to the town.

Sir Topham Hatt: But first, get rid of the bad coal and get some fresh one.

James: Nothing to it, I'll be right back.

James chuffed away as his exhaust smoke reaches Cranky Neil.

Cranky Neil: Not again.

After letting out a sneeze, Cranky Neil recovers as he and Sir Topham Hatt wait for the next train of the day.

Sir Topham Hatt: Where's that milk train?

Back at the roundhouse, Molly is awake will Edward was still sleeping. Molly catches Thomas chuffing next to her.

Molly: Wait a minute, Thomas. Aren't you forgetting about Edward?

Thomas: I don't want to wake him up.

Molly: But Edward usually pulls the milk train.

Thomas: Not today, I have a plan.

Molly: So you still want a train to pull?

Thomas: I'm an engine, aren't I?

Molly: Calm down, Thomas, I'm on your side. The fact is, I wouldn't mind if you were pulling a train for me.

Thomas: (excited) Really?

Molly: Of course. I got a little hitch in my boiler this morning. But you better get going.

Thomas: Thanks, Molly.

With Flynn beside him, Thomas crept towards the tower and controller as Molly looks in surprised at the milk tank cars he's pulling. Sir Topham Hatt is looking at the checklist, marking off the engines all ready doing their tasks.

Sir Topham Hatt: (not looking) Get that milk train moving, Edward.

Thomas: (imitating Edward) On my way, sir.

Cranky Neil spots what Thomas is doing and is cross.

Cranky Neil: What kind of joke of this?

Sir Topham Hatt: (noticing Thomas) Why are you pulling Edward's train?

Thomas: It's no joke. I can do it, just give me a chance.

Sir Topham Hatt: Thomas, I know you want to pull a train on your own, but you're...

Cranky Neil: (interuptting) You're too little, kid.

Flynn: (flying right up to Cranky Neil) What do you know, you overgrown pile of wood? Thomas is not too little.

Cranky Neil didn't like the little Flicky flying right up his face and blows his horn right back at him. Molly then appears near to both the tower and Sir Topham Hat.

Molly: What do you guys have for me, gentlemen?

Cranky Neil: That load of toys and stuff over there.

Sir Topham Hatt: What Neil is trying to say is that you are assigned to a special special in that shed.

Molly looked at the shed with the entrance that looks like a giant cake and gasps in delight at what's inside.

Molly: Fizzling fireboxes, it's the birthday train. But it's empty.

Cranky Neil: It won't be because Stubbs the clown is loading now, so get going.

Sir Topham Hatt: And remember, it must be get over the mountain by tomorrow morning if not today.

Molly: Yes sirs. (to Thomas) Don't worry Thomas. You'll have a train of your own someday, whether it's freight cars or two passenger coaches.

Thomas: (sadly) I hope I can.

Sir Topham Hatt: And you will, you just have to be patient.

Later, Molly is connected to the empty train of cars as a clown with orange hair, a small mustache, red and white checkered pants held by brown suspenders, brown fingerless gloves, a yellow long sleeved shirt, large brown shoes and a red and white hat stands next to her.

Stubbs: Are you ready?

Molly: Raring to roll, Stubbs.

Stubbs: (turning to an electric mouse type Pokemon) Okay, Pikachu, sound the whistle.

Pikachu nodded and blew a toot on his whistle as Stubbs begins roll call.

Stubbs: Plucky Duck!

Plucky Duck: Coming.

A green duck with a white sleeveless shirt appeared but tripped on his webbed feet.

Plucky: What's the rush.

Then came two giraffes (based on the giraffes from the cartoon "Nelly's Folly) as they approach their train car.

Plucky: They'll never fit in there.

The giraffes contracted their necks as they fit into their car and expanded them back to normal while sticking out of the opening in the roof.

Stubbs: Dumbo!

A baby blue eyed elephant with really big ears, a red clown collar with a yellow lining and a yellow clown hat appeared while trying to balance on a ball.

Dumbo: Oh dear.

He lets out a trumpet of surprise as he fell on top of a yellow teddy bear with a red shirt and black eyes.

Dumbo: Oops.

Stubbs: Winne the Pooh!

Pooh: (from under Dumbo's trunk) Coming.

A tin soldier (the 2 legged version of the Steadfast Tin Soldier from Timeless Tales from Hallmark) pulled Pooh out from under Dumbo and placed him in the train.

Stubbs: Lieutenant and Katrina!

The soldier turns around to see a ballerina (from the same Timeless Tales as the soldier) pirouette towards the train car where they will be as a toy marching band makes their way to the train car.

Stubbs: Everybody!

A work crew of teddy bears began to load the train with toys such as balls and kites and food like apples and oranges. Dumbo and Lieutenant helped a bit before heading to their train cars. Some small mice chefs even loaded a birthday cake. Thomas and Flynn the process from the roundhouse as the tank engine feels sad.

Thomas: That sounds like the most wonderful train ever.

Flynn: Don't worry, Thomas, you'll get your chance.

Finally, the last door to the birthday train banged as the last toy and food is loaded. Molly is ready to move as Stubbs prepares to give out the signal from atop of her cab.

Stubbs: It is my honor to say, that is I'm please to announce, that it is, uh, that it's time to...

Plucky: (impatient from his train car) Come on, let's go already.

Molly chuffed away with a sudden jolt, causing Stubbs to fall off the roof of the cab and into her tender.

Stubbs: (sooty from the coal) Um, yes, let's go.

Thomas can only watch as the birthday train leaves the train yard towards the mountain.

Thomas: I can do that.

Thomas is unaware that Molly is about to have an accident.

Wahoo!!! Awesome work Mike!! Loving this version of one of my favorite cartoons and stories growing up.

Everyone fits here, including the engines and Cranky. Not sure whether Neil is his actual name or a tribute to Tower's voice actor, Neil Ross, but I love it either way. Amazing work, I look forward to seeing more.

I'm so glad you actually know the Nelly's Folly cartoon. Maybe my 1001 Animations review might have caused awareness...
