Hey guys,
I was wondering if any of you know of a good program that allows me to record my desktop in a good quality without making photoshop or Sai lag. :C
I've seen Camstudio recommended a lot, but it lags my PC pretty bad and the results aren't convincing.
Any free (and safe) alternatives you've tried out? The most important part being no lag, and good quality video.
I'd really like to get back to making process/tutorial videos on youtube. u 3u;
As always, your comments and suggestions are very much appreciated! (sorry if I can't always reply to all!)
~Miki

tl;dr: get FRAPS and something to compress your videos afterwards, like VirtualDub.
Lag and stutter is produced by the simple fact that you need to compress the video on the fly.
Uncompressed, a full HD 30FPS video is close to 700GB per hour.
That is 12GB a minute. 200MB a second.
It is so big, that it is impossible to record; your HDD isn't nearly fast enough to write all the data, as the write rate of a HDD is somewhere between 100-50MB/sec.
The amount of lag depends on how powerful your computer is, and how much the video is compressed.
FRAPS for example, will drop the 12GB/minute to around 4GB/minute *(1920x1200@30FPS), which is small enough to be able to write, but the quality is almost perfect but compression is basically non-existent, your hour long video is still 300GB.
If you use something that is meant to be used by 'normal people', they will make the video nice and small so you can easily put it to youtube or email without additional work.
This means they heavily compress it while recording, resulting in lag and bad quality.

Well as far as free ones I've tried, I've used Bandicam, but my friend who has a normal laptop laggs to hell with it and it only records up to 10 minutes. And Quicktime records pretty well, but also only lasts 10 minutes and I think that's only for macs.
Fraps i've used for video game recording and it works really well for my friend (with the normal PC laptop) and myself and it has lots of options, but it's $37 But $37 for one account between however many computers. So if you'd like to borrow it and see
Seeing how frustrating it can be to find a good one o.o
It records any combination of voice, video and computer sounds at your leisure. But exports a .AVI file which can be a pain on a mac if you want to edit the video. Though it's a Windows type video file and seems to work fine with movie maker.

I've been using SnagIt (old version at least) quite a bit.
But be careful, nothing is ever easy and you need to be careful about some options with desktop recorders :
- Try not to use too high a framerate (1 frame per second is quite enough if you're planning to do a timelapse of a drawing for example)
- Don't have your screen in a crazy high resolution. The software will have to record all those pixels *every* frame! And each step up in resolution means 4 times the pixels
- See if there's a "high priority" option for the recording software and remove it. This is often the reason for *other* programs lagging.

oh, that's some really good advice there. thanks so much. I am not very...video-making-savvy, so this helps a lot. I will check out SnagIt as well. C:

Camtasia works well. I use it often. It has great voice optimization if you want to narrarate, and tons of extra features to make it look clean and professional.

I use livestream
i also made a tutorial on how to make speed paints using livestream recordings if you wanna take a look at that
[link]
sorry that the video is blurry, i later found out that it was blurry because i was recording my entire screen, if you make the screen size smaller, it won't be as blurry
it also depends on what quality you save the movie file as
hope this helps!

Personally, I use Hypercam2 since it is free and quick to download/install. While my PS works fine with it, I understand that it does slow some pcs down (my laptop is pretty hardy though, and it doesn't lag much if at all using Hyper, whereas Livestream causes lag to no end.)

Give Bandicam a try, it's commonly used for recording games but also works well for desktop recording. It's the best performing option I've tried so far. You can either record with watermark or buy the full version.

A site I recommend too is AlternativeTo, it gives you alternatives to any given application of your choice. For example, the URL below gives you alternatives to Camstudio.

Not exactly perfect, but pretty decent. Edited with Windows Movie maker xD
Only bad thing is that you can't record more then 20 min max at the time, all above that it wont render the video and you've got nothing in the end -____- ....Oh yea, and it takes a while to render it xD

As others already said, whatever program you use, the on-the-fly encoding of the video probably takes quite some CPU power, so recording a raw unencoded video might help with the lag. That will lead to humongous file sizes though if you record for a while. And you will have to encode the video afterwards, before uploading it to Youtube. But there are programs for that which make this step quite easy.
Another tip: reducing the video resolution will reduce the file size and CPU load. If you plan to upload the video to Youtube anyway, you won't need your full screen resolution in the video. Youtube offers the following resolutions:
1080p: 1920 x 1080
720p: 1280 x 720
480p: 854 x 480 <- This
360p: 640 x 360 <- or this should be enough unless you want a really high fidelity HD video.
240p: 426 x 240
So you should record in one of those to fit the display area on Youtube perfectly. If you cannot record in on of those resolutions, you should make sure that at least the Y-resolution of your recording matches one of the given modes. And if the program allows it, just record the part of the screen that is actually interesting for what you want to show.
If you want to see what the different resolutions look like on Youtube, just browse around some videos and take a look at their quality settings.
I hope that helps a bit. ^^

I agree with this.
Also, depending on your computer, you might be running an automatic CPU adjustment program(also known as a tuning, or voltage adjustment program). This may lag recording. I know it does with FRAPS.

As someone mentioned in a comment above, QuickTime Player has a screen recording option that you can use~ It's very handy and it didn't slow down my computer at all. When you stop recording, the program will automatically save the recording for you and put it in your computer's video files. (8

heres a list of a handful of programs, the only one I have personal experience with is webinaria which was pretty easy, and worked fine on my little underpowered old laptop, so it shouldnt be any problem on your system.
I used it to make tech tip webcasts for a news site I used to write for, it doesnt put a watermark on your video like a lot of free ones, and it spits out an AVI file so you can easily do some editing with the clip in just about any video editing suite, hell, I just used windows movie maker to cut mine together. [link]
Plus it has a nice little feature to let you pop a second video input so you can do things like have a webcam going to put you talking in the corner or showing things not on the screen, or be playing another clip into it to overlay multiple streams.

oh yah, it does audio and video both by the way. But this might not have a live streaming option, I never did live so I dont know for sure, definitely worth a try though, if you dont end up liking it, it has a simple uninstall right there in the start menu, so unlike some free programs, its easy to remove and you dont have to hunt it down in the control panel's program list.

Livestream is definitely a contender here. Only the stream speed is affected, your computer speed isn't affected a great deal.

I used Hypercam 2 when I made videos back in the day. It's alright lag-wise for me most of the time, and free.
Although make sure you have disc space otherwise when it runs out you lose the entire clip. :c

The normal problem with cam studio is the encoding settings. You could also just use FRAPS on a Windows 7 machine and record RAW footage, while massive file size it has minimal encoding to it.

livestream works for me, I find it depends on the computer though. Like my laptop can't handle a stream while muktiple programs, but my desktop has the processing power to run itunes, web, and sai all at once with little to no lag and you have to option to record your sessions
