Yet people don't seem to remember that even in shows like Sailor Moon, All of the Magical Girls died horribly in that too! It's no different.
Heck one of the Sailor Scouts even committed suicide, and there was also a part of a bunch of the Sailor Scouts being crucified on Crosses!

didnt see a lot of this stuff having grown up in the west! i think madoka was a lot more brutal because the darker themes showed up in the first few episodes compared to how these darker themes showed up much later in the sailor moon series. so madoka magica was a big shocker for everyone who thought they were watching some innocent mahou shoujo show o:

Actually, in the first few episodes of Sailor Moon, the ones where she was just learning how to use her powers, we got treated to things like Molly's Boyfriend dying a horrible death. And then there was also stuff like those scenes where she and the other girls would have PTSD-like nightmares from fighting The Negaverse for so long.
Also there was ones like Ojamajo DoReMi, which had stuff like DoReMi's mother trying to kill herself, a girl getting caught in a Car Accident, another girl's mother suffering a tragic miscarriage, and last but not least, Non-Chan showing suffering and dying of cancer.
