This poem was beautiful and impact me with full force. I loved the simplicity and that it came straight from the heart. I once felt the self-hatred set in and the poem speaks for itself. This poem had snapped me out of my little depression I get every once in a while the first time I read it. It was very well said and to me (and possibly to many other people suffering from self-hate ) was very meaningful. Overall, I believe you did an exceptional job in writing this meaningful and very uplifting piece of literature that everyone should read and acknowledge.

I had a fight with my dad last night and he called me horrible things and when later he noticed that I was crying he asked me why I was crying... and he wouldn't accept the fact that it was his fault and kept playing to be the martyr of all martyrs. so this kinda cheered me up... I needed this... thank you, the poem is really lovely and good.

I don't know, one's personality seems like a potentially pretty valid reason to hate them.

As far as I am concerned, I don't think there is any hatred that is meaningful.
Hatred, is not a destructive emotion, but a 'self-destructive' force. Those who have it, do more harm to themselves than the ones they think they're targeting.

Uh, nop.
Hatred comes from us: our choices and experiences that we have interpreted negatively over the years.

Thank you for it.

You hate hatred. You're totally hating on hate, but hate is fine as long as you don't act on it. I hate lots of things but I don't kill or hurt people.
If you are violent you are going to hurt and kill regardless of hate.
I am pro-hate and you hurt my feelings by talking so badly about it.

Now I disagree, you're dehumanizing them when you say they deserve to be hated.
Sure, people can be horrible, but they're still humans like you and I.
Saying someone deserves to be hated is no better than the person you think needs to be hated.
EVERYONE deserves forgiveness.
In before you say "Hitler did (insert messed up thing here)"
By saying that you fail to realize we're all human and we all make mistakes.
By saying people deserve to be hated that makes you no better than the ones that are hated.
No one should have to be hated by anyone no matter what they do or have done...
No one should have to live with the pain of being hated, no one.

Firstly repentance deserves forgiveness; anything else deserves appropriate punishment. People are selfish, and if they can get away with doing something that benefits themselves at the expense of another without punishment, they will continue to do it. For the greater good of humanity, people who commit harmful acts need to be kept in line; they can't just be forgiven at whim. Evil people need to be punished in order to protect the rest of society, and treating everyone equally would not make for a fair nor just system
Bad decisions are one thing, but making one--or even a few--bad decisions is much different than being someone who continuously and willfully harms, victimizes, and abuses other people. One bad action does not equal another, that's why people are criticized for cheating vs. locked away for murder. Everyone makes bad decisions, but that doesn't mean everyone's equal in either their vileness nor their entitlement to forgiveness
Also, you have a strange view of morality of you think hating, for example, a sexually abusive mother is equally as bad as being a sexually abusive mother. Hating an evil person does not make one as evil as the person doing the evil deed. It's completely illogical to think that they're even remotely comparable
Why shouldn't some humans be hated in the first place? If being hated is so painful then it's an appropriate punishment for evil-doers. Unless they show genuine remorse and also discontinue from their old ways, evil-doers need to be punished. That way if they don't stop out of genuine repentance, they'll at least stop out of the selfish desire to avoid pain. But punishment should be inflicted on some people for the well-being of the many decent people of society. Other than that forgiveness and compassion should be conditional; not all humans deserve it

Aren't you just a little ray of sunshine. You forgive to let go of your negative emotions, not because the subject of your hate deserves it. Forgiveness doesn't mean you won't carry out justice. Forgiveness just clears your head of useless emotions. But of course whether you boil your head with your own feelings of hatred or clear it out and let it breathe is your choice entirely, i'm not saying you should/need to aim to feel better. Feel bad if you want. I just wouldn't want to live like that.

I do "clear my head" as you put it, but only after justice is served. How can one be content and have no negative emotions while someone they know is still actively harming and abusing other people, or while someone they know is still being actively harmed and abused by another? Negative emotions in situations like this are inevitable, and there's no reason one shouldn't feel angry about evil-doers

WhiteRaven90 In reply to Nikebotes [2014-06-06 06:24:33 +0000 UTC]
It isn't inevitable to have negative emotions in situations like that, there is plenty of evidence against that. All emotions can be tempered, kept in check and directed with self-discipline. Also there is a significant difference between anger and hatred. Anger can be productive. Hatred is a primitive auto-response to feeling threatened, fearful, its evolutionary significance was to enable you to dehumanize and kill others of your kind for food, resources, territory and possessions. Needless to say hatred is obsolete today. Again, silencing hatred is for your own good. You can't think rationally and can't find the best solutions while you are in that state of mind. It's an egoistic state of mind, you are not thinking of fair justice while you are in it. I'm probably even talking to you in vain due to that, but i thought i'd give it a go.

Either hyper- or hypo-emotional states are not healthy. Regulating emotions to an extent (so that you don't fly into a blind rage when someone cut you off in traffic or so that you don't overreact to minor, everyday setbacks) can be helpful. But silencing and suppressing emotions when something genuinely traumatic happens doesn't tend to help anyone

Emotions should be proportional to the event, and as such sometimes it's appropriate to feel hatred, at least temporarily

I feel like, yes it is wrong and you probably should be punished,
but if you look back at your past.
You have done something that you regret and it was something really messed up.
Everyone is guilty of wronging. IF everyone is guilty then everyone should be hated by everyone else?
OR should we learn to forgive one another. You don't have to like them, but you shouldn't HATE someone.

Nikebotes In reply to Mute-the-Boy [2014-06-06 06:13:43 +0000 UTC]
You say "everyone is guilty", but there are different degrees of guiltiness. One crime doesn't equal another, and someone who cheated on his girlfriend once while drunk isn't equally as wrong as someone who abuses her children. Not all evil is the same, some actions are more harmful than others and it's not justice to treat every action, from a lie to a murder, exactly the same
Also someone making a bad decision in the past, regretting that choice, and turning away from the past action (repentance) is very much different than someone who is actively and willfully harming people. Someone who repents and is no longer an evil-doer is not equally as harmful or dangerous as someone who is still committing harm and who is not repenting

Everyone has the potential to be harmful, everyone is also harming someone.
Everyone is also guilty of something that is morally unjust.
You speak of child abuse, did your parents abuse you?
If you are a parent did you abuse your child?
You don't need to answer these, in fact I'd rather you not.
But, everyone is guilty of something that is just as bad as that or worse whether they think about it or not.
Whether they remember it or not.
I'm guilty of things.
Once when I was little I decided to play with fire, and I ended up setting fire to someone's fence.
I learned my lesson, I did something horrible, I'm pretty sure I won't do that again.
But nonetheless everyone is guilty, whether it was due to being a child or full intent of a mature mind.
You've done something. Told someone "kill yourself", harmed someone (potentially fatally), tried to kill someone.
Got so angry you said something that might have hurt someone for life. Set fire to your neighbor's fence, etc.
If you say you're not then you're either lying, or you're not thinking deep enough of your past or the consequences of your doing.
You're wrong if you think you should hate someone, because HATE only poisons you. You shouldn't hate someone ever.

Wow, no actually I've never deliberately done anything like that. Seriously, what kind of people do you know if you think everyone's guilty of mortally wounding someone, trying to kill someone, verbally bullying people, etc.? Not everyone's a bully or has been a bully at some point in their lives. For most people they worst thing they ever did was probably a one-time thing that they now regret, or something a lot more minor than abusing someone or trying to kill someone
And I have to reiterate: making a bad decision in the past and regretting it is not the same as being someone who willfully and persistently harms and abuses people. You keep giving examples of regrettable bad decisions and one-time things, but those are not equal to continuous evil actions that the person refuses to repent from
Saying "everyone is guilty" makes one crime equal every other crime, which is completely illogical. And even if someone deliberately commits a horrible crime (which is much different than someone accidentally setting fire to someone's fence) and then repents from it, it makes them a much better person than someone who doesn't repent and who is still voluntarily victimizing others
Hatred is more often than not--of course not including irrational prejudice against people--a reaction to people's wrongdoings. To hold on to hatred even after justice has been served and/or after the person has repented would be counterproductive; however hatred in itself is a completely natural reaction to be victimized or seeing people you care about being victimized. It does no good to deny the existence of negative emotions

You can't trust anyone because if you do they'll take the life of you or a loved one.
