Description
Hikaru Ichijyo (Rick Hunter) climbing in his sporter aircraft over Ataria Island (Macross). SDF1, the gigantic space ship, is visible in Macross City beneath. The first of my attempts to learn how to paint more alive looking scenery, and faster than usual, not obsessing much with details. Took about 2Β½ hours in Photoshop CS. Partial references for the backdrop and for Hikaru.

This is so squeek. I love the view. It looks so cool.
I have a New Robotech/Macross club at It's for Robotech fans and those that have made art for it. Since you seem to be a fan and have done art for it we would like for you to join.
Thank you for your time.

Nice gallery, my only advice would be that alot of the surfaces you paint in your works seem the same. Try to mix up the amount of reflectivity and specularity on different surfaces... so you're showing some variety of materials on the objects. You usually render all the surfaces fairly matte.

mikkow In reply to sinix [2005-07-27 07:39:58 +0000 UTC]
You are abslutely correct, and I know I tend to matte my way through everything. Which is kind of stupid, as I have a pretty good understanding of light (reflections, specularity, could paint chrome probably without too much effort, etc). I think I mostly lack in the planning area.. plain scenes, plain angles, etc.

Very nice work I think a vertical framing would have make an even better picture by increasing the idea of climb. But it's already very nice

You might be right - I didn't try it. Then again, it might have brought focus away from the large SDF1 on the ground (which is an essential part). Now we'll NEVER KNOW

After seeing this and your Minmei piece I'm feeling tempted to try my hand at some Macross fanart. Nice stuff.

mikkow In reply to shaloop [2005-06-29 18:44:01 +0000 UTC]
Please do! Try to be creative if you do - something more creative than this climb piece (my minmei was creative I think, never seen anyone do her realistically before, and the locker room thing)
I'm working on a zentradi-kicks-ass-in-macross-city piece. Then I have slight urges to do Millia and Misa Hayase one way or another (Misa being Japanese according to stats, but doesn't look it in the show, I'd love to see how she might really look like).
The Macross/robotech show itself provides good references for buildings, etc. But Ghost in the shell: Stand Alone Complex is gold when it comes to urban references.. so bloody good looking.

Ooh, great piece of Hikaru, although I'm more of a Max fan, but he's still awesome! I love the effects created by making the SDF1 and the island in the background fuzzy, it really does make it look more like a real picture.

I had no choice, the background was so undetailed. It looked too awful, so I just applied a proper good out-of-focus camera type filter on the background layers, and some grain. Haha.. masking the ugly parts.
I'm just trying to do these 'quick' paintings, and I keep looking for inspiration/material of something quick and doable from the TV show and movie. Sooo slightly random pieces of fanart thus appear. I'm doing a Zentradi themed painting next, but it's more of a matte painting (incorporating photo elements, Poser 3D, etc). Here's how it looks like with a sketched character and a BASE photo backdrop (that is going to be majorly painted over and changed around) [link] - Luckily I know the photo copyright holder.
Matte paintings are interesting. Very fast and great for detail and feel. Trying to use the best of different mediums.

Well, I like what I see so far in the Zentradi piece, it looks like it's going to be pretty cool. I totally understand trying to find inspiration by watching stuff, I do that all the time to search for a feel of the relationships between characters and for the typical emotions that certain characters would feel in different situations.
Don't feel about about covering up the messy background, what you did worked very well, and looks awesome!

Haha, I did cover it up.. because it was too messy and bad looking. This is how it looks like without the focus filter - [link] Nasty isn't it? If you change the numbers you could see the painting from creation to finish, too. Doubt you'd be that interested though. Oh I'll just link, in stages:

And then the last one you know.

2.5 hours? That's pretty quick. If you ever feel like putting a little bit more time in, I think another set of white highlights might be nice for the ship and glass. (More like small streaks).

Dude. Awesome, you rock at painting.. I need some patience, to be able to conquer that.

mikkow In reply to daylight-dancer [2005-06-18 21:16:34 +0000 UTC]
I think one part is just experience (this is a big part). This includes understanding how light interacts with surfaces and objects. Really really important.
The second is just working smart. Not to try to draw something you don't know for sure how it looks like from all angles, to get reference/research material to look at, to use the functions in the program (if digital) fully (like layers, what a life saver).
Then patience, of course - can't get anywhere without it
PS. Always cool to impress you! haha.. Feels great.

mikkow In reply to TDBK [2005-06-18 10:55:55 +0000 UTC]
Depth was one of those goals.. lol. Not just some static typical mikkscene.
The blur is clever. Firstly, the background isn't convincingly detailed when untouched. Secondly, it brings focus to the plane, which is the center piece. Thirdly, it makes it look more like a realistic photo.
