im gunna join the argument now and say "if you somehow think this is porn (somehow 
plus, just a photo of a random butt is understandably more on the line between the two, but this piece has so much more to it, not to mention the obvious amounts of work involved in creating it.

this is the point where i would normally say "its only my opinion, so therefor its an idea and im sure you have your own", but really on a piece like this, if you really feel the need to call it porn, then you should really get off the bandwagon and grow and original thought of your own for a change.

Actually, this is pornographic by definition. So is some of Giger's work. That doesn't mean it's not art: Something can be both artful and pornographic. I certainly think it is well-drawn; that is my opinion. You're allowed to like it, but you're allowed to like pornography in general. However, the fact that it is pornographic is not an opinion.
Besides, even if you would argue that it weren't pornographic, it's still sexist regardless. I can understand why people have a problem with it. I personally don't care for it much (I have no idea whether this is part of a longer story or just a single panel) although the artist is a very talented illustrator. As for the "obvious amounts of work involved": That also goes for most pornographers. Time, labour or effort define neither art nor pornography. Some porno takes years to make, some art takes seconds. That doesn't mean anything. Neither does popular opinion in an argument, so you can't invalidate someone's opinion because you feel like it isn't original.

i agree i got ahead of myself in the "being original" part. i only meant it in the sense of the amount of people ive spoken to who 'seem' to the best of my knowledge to be following the crowd or joining the mob in out right denouncing what they are viewing without at least trying to see the beauty past the prejudice (i'm coming across slightly hypocritical arnt it haha XD)
i know some like it and some dont, both for their own reasons, and all reasons are valid. i do understand this but i rarely shy away from at least explaining where i stand and why in replies to negative comments in this area.
Negativity without constructive criticism, at least for here, just provokes frustration and sadness for me as i would hope that no matter how different the views were, that you should at least be able to discuss why certain points are bad or good.
maybe this is too idealistic, but i can wonder.

Well, the thing with idealism is that you'll probably always be "too" idealistic in some people's eyes, but that's the point behind voicing your idealism in the first place.
Porn is essentially anything that is made to arouse. It doesn't necessarily have to be the only goal or the primary goal. Admittedly, the artist's intentions are about the greyest of grey areas, but I think you would be fooling yourself if you were to argue that this image does not heavily fetishise and objectify the female body. That's also where the sexism comes in. I'm not quite familiar with this genre and I'm not the best person to say what exactly is going on in this image, but it shows all the classic elements of voyeurism, the male gaze and the othering of women. Essentially, it's focalised from a men's perspective; the men are the actors while the women are passive; the women are portrayed as different and dangerous; and at the same time the women are portrayed as sexually desirably to make them less threatening. These type of fiction usually end with the femme fataleΒ defeated, usually dead or conquered in some other way.
Now I won't deny that I find the female form attractive. But as a woman myself, I suppose this sort of subtext is much more apparent. Most men (and women!) don't even realise that this enforces and perpetuates the position of women in society as second-class citizens, simply because they are "different" or because "men don't understand them".
This doesn't necessarily mean that pornography is intrinsically wrong. But unfortunately, most media do this in some form or the other, whether it be erotic fiction or hardcore porno, or a seemingly innocent advertisement for a sports drink (just to name an example). And here's where my own struggle with being "too idealistic" comes in. I believe it is important that everyone in the world realises these things but I also know that, sadly, most of the world is unaware. It's an incredible task, and some people are close to impossible to reason with, but that doesn't mean one should give up on their ideals. Just take small steps.
This image is not the root of all evil. But it's also not completely innocent. Compare it to legal crime: Shoplifting isn't by far as big of a crime as homicide, but that doesn't mean shoplifters should go unpunished. On the other hand, it also doesn't mean that shoplifters should receive the same punishment as murderers.Β Similarly, this image may not be as terrible as sex trafficking, but that doesn't mean we should ignore it. Sexism is deeply ingrained in most Western culture, and that should be addressed, even though it will be an arduous process before anything really changes.
What I'm trying to say is: It's good to be idealistic, but every situation deserves an apt response.Β

How constructive. I have nothing with negative opinions and dislikes as people are free to express themselves. But often these negative opinions are just rude and useless, so why commenting? Why not being more polite and taking your time to put one or two arguments, rather than leaving a turd to the artist?
