"I don't understand why Gamzee is so freaking popular" I say to myself as I spend a solid 5 hours on this.

On tumblr I split the original image up into two sort of like a diptych. I'm not sure if this looks better whole or in two.

Is it bad that I saw--in the thumbnail--rainbow colours, two baton-items in hands, the arm pose, and I thought it was a Byakuren crossover?

It'll be interesting to see people's takes on the full image vs the diptych - I think both work as far as showing the two sides of Gamzee from the story. I think also they might make interesting standalone pieces by themselves, as you've got enough detail in the whole piece to split it and get away with it.
I've drawn Gamzee for some Homestuck meme but that's about it (I'm a Capricorn so he's my patron troll eek) , but I gotta tell ya, the most fun part is doing multicolored blood splotches for his background.

Fun thing about the blood. I just painted up a big layer full of colors, put a layer of black over it, then used the splatter brushes as an eraser. Kind of like one of those old scratch boards from back in the day!
I need to do that meme some time. I've drawn my patron troll before (Sollux), but I take too long on them!

I'll have to try that, sounds like it'd make for some fun background artage. These days with my Portal-themed doodles I tend to have loads of fun with the custom brushes doing textury, painterly backdrops these days, just for shits and giggles.
Sollux....damn. I keep meaning to draw him and I never get around to it. I think he, Terezi, and Karkat are my fave trolls. And due to some vision issues (I can read even fine print thanks to good bifocals, just don't ask me to drive a car) I ended up with the same smell thing as Terezi. Ever tried to draw a picture with Mr. Sketch markers, and then tried to find your place on it with your eyes closed just by the smell? That's how I see Terezi's smell-o-vision working.
