Both of your "Alchemist" paintings are amazing! I love this one, and the one that shows her with half of her body completely transformed. For the benefit of those curious to see, here is a link to that painting:

There are so many things these two images are symbolic of... transformation being the obvious, but there is also transcendence, going beyond the limitations of one's humanity to become something more and greater, and of course ascendance as well. All of these concepts fit the theme of this, and that is part of these paintings' magic and mystical presentation. I like the further symbolism you've added here regarding illumination, especially with the extremely subtle eye in the pyramid, with the eye on the goblet being at the pyramid's center. Those who understand the meaning will pick up on that, and get how that relates to this scene as a whole... whilst those who do not will just see it as a mystical symbol that happens to look cool. Me, I get the meaning, and I like it a lot! The symbolism is taken even further with the woman's left eye being obscured behind her hair. It seems that she has chosen to transform her left side of her body, which is mystical and esoteric symbolism is the "dark" side but also the feminine side, pertaining to the Divine Feminine. In some esoteric Christian traditions, for instance, the archangel Gabriel is seen (correctly I might add) as female and is described as being seated at the left hand of God's throne, and is herself often referred to as the Left Hand of God with either Michael or Christ being the Right Hand. So there is a vast artistic, mystical tradition behind the sacredness of the feminine left-handed side. As well as its' links to the left-handed path... dark magic to some... but that is part and parcel of the sort of magical arts this alchemist in this picture must have practiced to reach this point in her transformation. All in all, there are so many layers and levels of meaning to this... and that makes it one of my favorite works of art here on DeviantArt! I'll be adding the second of these to my favorites also.

I did a painting many years ago that also was heavy on the symbolism and meaning... mine was of a mystical Grail Maiden. Your painting here is sort of evocative of the Grail legends as well, since the Grail has ever been seen as something that transforms those who seek and find it. Here is a link to my Grail Maiden, so you can check it out if you like:

As I said, I'm a huge fan of this sort of mystical and symbolic art! Nearly all of my black and white drawings contain some measure of mysticism and symbolism too.

Fuckin awesome you picked up on it! Yes the brief was that she is some kind of 'alchemist' performing experiments and transformations on her own body, so I thought it was appropriate. The robes are very inspired by his also.
