so I got this neat little book for Christmas that has a guide for a whole bunch of prehistoric animals and I love it! I've always loved prehistoric animals and paleontology and the artwork in this book inspired me to try and draw some (I heavily referenced the book's artwork btw). so anyway, here they are and I actually think they turned out pretty good!top left- Procompsognathus: A theropod, and one of the smallest known dinosaurs from the Triassic period. It was a very able hunter, capable of running at high speeds for short distances, possessing acute senses and quick reflexes the sharp claws on its long hind legs could be used to slash and tear at prey. It stood around 12in(30cm) and measured around 4ft(1.2m) long. It weighed around 2-6lbs(1-2.5kg).
top right- Liopleurodon: Liopleurodon wasn't actually a dinosaur, but belonged to an order of aquatic reptiles known as plesiosaurs that lived around the same time as dinosaurs. Just it's skull measured 10ft(3m) long. It was able to smell its prey underwater and lurked in murky lower depths, to ambush unsuspecting prey from below. Liopleurodon measured around 39-49ft(12-15m) long. It is not known what the weight of Liopleurodon likely was.
bottom left- Velociraptor: probably one of the most commonly known dinosaurs, there are many very large raptor dinosaurs, but true velociraptors only stood about 3 ft(1 m) tall and only measured about 5-7 ft (1.5-2 m) long, including the tail! However, what it lacked in size, the velociraptors made up for in speed and intelligence. They were cunning predators, with a 3.5 in (9cm) long sickle-like talon on each foot capable of disemboweling prey. It likely weighed about 55 lbs(25kg).
bottom right- Erlikosaurus: A therizinosaur, a group of large, sharp-clawed asian dinosaur. Paleontologists were very confused by its anatomy. It had a slender, toothless beak with small leaf-shaped cheek teeth, often features of plant-eating dinosaurs, with four toed feet and a small head that were commonly traits of the herbivorous sauropods. However, it possessed very large-clawed, three-fingered hands perfect for capturing and slashing prey open, digging in the ground for mammals and large insects, and possibly even catch fish. While Erlikosaurus is classified as a theropod, a carnivore, it has many features contradicting a purely carnivorous lifestyle, leading us to believe it was most likely an omnivore. Erlikosaurus stood at about 9 ft (2.7m) tall and measured about 16-20ft(5-6m) long. It is thought to have weighed around 353lbs(160kg).
