Just a quick pic of maple and apple before she got prangent and apple started cheating and she got kicked out of thunderclan and went on a murder spree and all that jazz. I honestly think they really had some potential before all that happened. Like there's a lot the books don't explain about them like their back stories, how they met and how long they were together and all that, so I came up with my own head cannons. I hc that they both came from broken families/ had rough pasts. Mapleshade was a rouge kit found abandoned under a maple tree by Bloomheart, her eventual mentor. She was too young to remember anything before coming to thunderclan though. She was raised by Bloomheart alongside birchkit(face) and freckle kit(wish). Thunderclan had recently gone through a really tough leafbare and lost several cats to sickness and hunger, including oakstar's mate and any other queen, so bloomheart was tasked with caring for them. All throughout her kithood and most of her apprenticeship, mapleshade was small, weak and feeble, until she hit a growth spurt towards the end of her apprenticeship and went on to be the biggest cat in the clans. Despite the support from her adopted family and a few trusted clan mates, she often felt alone and out of place. Freklewish and birchface were two moons older, so she spent at least two moons alone in the nursery. Additionally, she developed a serious illness halfway through her apprenticeship that led to her spending moons in the medicine den, and not being made a warrior until six moons later than she should have been, so for many moons she was alone in the apprentice den. Even as a warrior, she never truly felt accepted by most of the clan, and even heard cats gossiping about who her parents could be, her not being a real thunderclan cat, or that she was strange and a loner. Other cats were nervous around her/ didn't know the real her because of her size. It was as though a shadow constantly followed her, earning her the name mapleshade. She went on to become a very skilled warrior, often being chosen in battle in earning many scars as a result. During the last few moons of her apprenticeship, maplepaw was wandering around four trees, her favorite place to escape clan life for a bit, when she met applepaw, who was still early into his apprenticeship. Now some appledusk headcanons. He's about ten or so moons younger than mapleshade. He had an abusive/neglegtive father who often lashed out at him and wouldn't even acknowledge him as his own son. His mother was manipulative as well as emotionally abusive, often blaming applekit/paw for his father's actions and saying horrible things like she hated him or wished he was never born. He was given a very emotionally detached mentor, who never really praised him or gave him any love/support. The only cat who treated him nicely was a young warrior named reedshine, but she was usually busy and didn't have time to spend with him. Applepaw feels unloved and not enough. When he meets maplepaw, she really builds his confidence. She praises him for his speed and agility, and his original personality. She flatters him with her surprising kindness. The two continue to meet at four trees, at first only every quarter moon or so, but eventually almost every night. Applepaw looks beyond maplepaw's size and strength, seeing her beautiful personality and heart instead. He also is one of the few cats to find her physically attractive and often tells her so. The two quickly become close and valued friends, often confiding in each other. Applepaw has a crush on maplepaw, but maplepaw just thinks he's a cute kit. Maplepaw soon becomes mapleshade, applepaw following several moons later. It's only a little while after appledusk has become a warrior when mapleshade also starts to develop feelings for him. The two eventually confess to each other and become mates. A couple years pass and then the events of Mapleshade's Vengeance occur.

So yeah, those are my personal headcanons about these two. Sorry it was so long lol. Also, I know Mapleshade looks ridiculously large when compared to average sized Appledusk in this pic, but I picture maple as a Maine Coon, which, look it up, can literally grow to twice the size of a normal cat.
