It was a dimension door. Basically, it folded space so one could travel great distances without moving.

This is how the Ancient Ones traveled about. They had such total control of their mentality that they could literally will themselves to go from point A to point B instantaniously. To a person watching on either end, they would see the individual fade out at A and fade in at B. It would be a totally silent event lasting about a second. We modern humans of today lack such discopline and thus must use machines.
