I believe Chooki secretly wears that charm under his shirt so that nobody can take it from him and his coach can't tell him to remove it. I mean, it probably means so much to Chooki that he would hate himself if anybody took it from him, right? And childhood buddies makes too much sense for these two. They just... click. You know.
