Cutie! My mom stopped my dad from almost running over a snapper one time and she got out of the truck and flipped him over on his back with a stick and skidded him across the road lol.

Oh wow! You very brave here, or entirely nuts. I've seen these things take up the back of a pickup truck. And lightning fast. Very cool shot though. You awesome!

Thank you! Really? Β I've only seen them lumbering around slowly. Β They usually come up on the rocks when I'm cooking. They have always been well behaved and friendly to me. I'm always swimming in the lakes...should I be scared ?Β

Oh no, the pretty mellow. Not a lot of horror stories on the snapper. Very good eating if prepared properly. They mostly feed off the bottom of ponds, swamps and stay submerged for quite some time. They are amazingly ugly. The babies are somewhat "cute", but there babies.

Yes very prehistoric looking. One time I was getting some water to cook and I got the fright of my life.
There I was filling my pot, kneeling on a rock and leaning into the water, when this dark scary looking loch ness monster was swimming up to me really fast.Β LOL I thought it was a dragon or a dinosaur!! You never saw anyone jump up so fast. But it was just an enormous snapper coming up to see who was making noise. Β

Indeed. If it were a shiny pot that was probably his target. They love to gobble shiny things drifting or floating by. A lot like the walleye.Β

Yes it was a shiny pot, you are right! I thought it might have been the noise. Β Thanks for teaching me that!

I not sure if snappers can hear so well. They do have ears or rather vibrational ports in there skulls but most of their lives are spent submerged in mud. Ugh, what a life.

Cool! I had no idea about the mud submerging. I see them a lot sunning themselves on rocks that line the rivers and lakes I paddle. Β They look like lazy sentinels.

Right. A good sign of your water content. They won't frequent water that has no life.

You would be right there. Places I go have no roads, no phone reception, no hydro, no houses, no humans. Β Only way in is with a canoe. Very remote and unspoiled. Water is wonderful and very full of life.

Indeed. Sounds like heaven to me. Been in that direction for some time. Almost got It worked out. Sort-of a redo on Thoreau Walden. Been working on this for a few years. The pieces are finally almost stacked in my favor. Just thinkin

I went to the woods because I wished to live deliberately,
to front only the essential facts of life, and see if I could not learn what it had to teach,
and not, when I came to die, discover that I had not lived.

She's beautiful!Β

Are they really friendly? Their name sort of implies that you might lose a finger if you pat them.

minamiko In reply to xjames7 [2017-02-27 05:40:56 +0000 UTC]

Yes they can come right out of the water and up on shore to check you out! They are beautiful indeed! But I imagine they could very well snap off some fingers under the right circumstances! I would proceed with caution. Some of the older ones can get bigger than a frying pan! Β
