I think mental ray is harder to use then vray, didn't use mental ray alot though, but switched pretty quickly to vray. Haven't tried vray on maya but I guess it's pretty much the same as for 3ds.
I don't think it would be very hard to switch to vray.
You should definitely try the demo.

I'm thinking of rendering my work in V-ray instead of Mental Ray. How hard is it to switch over? Bear in mind, I use Maya.
