use a wide aperture - these were taken at 1.8 aperture, which is wider than kit lenses can go to! the 50mm lens is £109, and one of the best things i've ever bought. do it

haha, i don't know how to do it on the d40, as my d80 has a dedicated aperture wheel on the front of the camera and a shutter speed on the back (or the other way round, i can never remember unless using the camera)... there'll be a submenu or button somewhere!

hm...theres a wheel on me camera, but i think its shutter speed...and then theres the aperture knoby thing
so you think the wheels use changes according to what knobby thing the caeras on?

yeah, if you're on aperture priority the wheel will control aperture and the camera will set the shutter according to what it thinks will get the best exposed photo. crazy times!
