So allow me to explain this kind of odd picture.

Texas had an arctic blast hit the week of Christmas, and we happened to have quite a few monarch caterpillars on some still surviving milkweed in the yard. My mom had the bright idea to take some cuttings and put them in wet mulch in a plastic bin so they could keep eating inside the house.

It worked! Out of the half dozen or so who managed to cocoon, this is #4. We're just waiting on 3 more or so to hatch out. Once this one's wings are good, we'll let them out into the garden

(One managed to escape the gauze "lid" we put over the bin and glued itself to the kitchen table leg before we could stop it. We're now very closely monitoring it so we don't miss it and have to start a frantic house hunt for a wayward butterfly. 🤣)
