Countess Elisabeta Popescu is the last surviving member of the once noble Zaleska family, an ancient bloodline that ruled over much of rural Transylvania during medieval times from their stronghold Castle Popescu.

While the Zaleskas amassed much wealth and power over the centuries, they also developed a reputation for practicing black magic and consorting with evil forces. Many family members exhibited odd behaviors and eccentricities.

Elisabeta was born in 1782, the only child of Count Viktor Popescu and his wife Ilona. From a young age, Elisabeta was drawn to the dark artifacts and occult tomes filling the castle libraries. Her parents encouraged these interests.

By age 20, she had firmly embraced the dark legacy of her ancestors. Rumors spread that she was initiating gruesome rituals deep within the castle walls to maintain her youth, beauty, and life itself. She never married, refusing all suitors.

When her parents died under mysterious circumstances in 1803, twenty-one year old Elisabeta became the sole ruler of Castle Popescu. She withdrew fully from Transylvanian society, living in bizarre seclusion. Her only companions were wolves and bats.

In the decades since, Elisabeta has used necromancy and black magic to maintain her unnatural lifespan, preying on villagers too foolish to avoid the Countess and her dreaded castle. She is now over 160 years old.
