Description
I drew this for one of my closest friends and I really hope it makes her smile. She inspired it with her words and ideas and spirit. I'm going to order her a huge print for her wall to show my eternal gratitude.I was trying to capture that moment when someone suddenly appears in your field of vision and you can really only see their silhouette because your eyes haven't dark-adapted yet. That kind of mysterious, disorienting feeling when you want to see more, but your eyes just won't let you.
I made this in oc and photoshop, mostly photoshop though. Making it so that I could have a print was the most challenging. I was working w/o a ref so that I wouldn't have to deal with getting clearance for a reference photo. And I was working on it spliced into pieces in separate .psds, head in one file, hands in another, etc, since my computer was lagging when I tried to work on it all in one canvas. This piece took a lot of tinkering, to get the peices to configure back together and to get the anatomy right.
This was also in the most recent Raster chapter [link]
edit 5/21/07 - refined some things to make a better print

Oh my gosh this is beautiful... So beautiful.. Mystical, I just love the colors you used with and against her stiletto.
I'm wondering if the fruit she carries in her bowl is the "fruits" she could carry in life, always growing and blossoming? A light there against the dark over you?

Thanks. This image came from a conversation with a friend about creativity and femininity. The fruit symbolizes fertility, but not just the child-bearing aspect. It's meant to represent growing ideas and movements and change of various types, all using a feminine nurturing energy. I also wanted the image to have a coming-of-age aspect, with the idea of creating your own light when the world goes dark.

I like that. In Christian religion there is an analogy used called the Tree of Life and it's fruit
is described as being white above all whites and desireable above all else. I wondered if you had
heard of this and represented it with your picture because your picture has that purity and quality
about it. Looking at this woman she appears to be someone special, which every person is.

Love the colors. Are the bowl and fruit representative of the womb, or am I reading too much into it?
