I thought it would be interesting to make a piece inspired by a song, so I made this to go along with "Sophisticated Lady." I wasn't trying to make this look like anyone in particular, but halfway through, she started to resemble Mary J. Blige to me. I didn't work from a photo reference, though, and now I think this would have come out better if I had. I was going to put some sort of retro bar/club background in, but I got tired of working it. I tried to make it more realistic than my other submissions, but there are a lot of things in it that bother me. I uploaded it anyway it to see if anyone has any suggestions.

I think that not having a background here works in your favor.
Just like the song, she's *trying* to live in the moment. But failing. And so, it doesn't matter *where* she is or who she's with. Doesn't matter if the restaurant is full of precious treasures for decoration, if the wine is vintage, if her hair is bejeweled, if the man is true.
The place she wants to be, the love she wants to be with, remains in bittersweet memories in the back of her mind: making mere shadows and crumbled paper out of anyone she tries to be with and anywhere she tries to be.
She is lonely, lonely, lonely, and cannot escape it. This is what loneliness looks like.

Personally, I like this piece much better than the ones that aren't quite as realistic.
This one says a lot more . . .
you can just see the jaded weariness in her eyes, feel it in her body language.

the picture is nicely done, shadows and all, i like the black around her, gives all the attention to her, one thing i dont like is the smoke and the way she puffs it out, you probably arent a smoke if u drew it like that, the smoke should be not that dense and lines twirlng all over, hope you got me
