Description
I usually do a Halloween-themed custom series each autumn, but I can't do any customizing at the moment because my eyes hate me, so this girl was the only Halloween design I was able to complete for 2006. She's been rerooted with black and red Saran hair, and her symbols and eyes were hand painted with artist quality acrylics and sealed. She was sold last week and is on her way to her new home. ^_^

I have a tutorial that explains the process in detail (although it's several years old and a little out of date here and there).
The short answer: I remove the old symbols with a solvent, paint new symbols with acrylic paint, pull out the hair and thread in plugs of new hair. A custom like Arachne takes about five or six hours to complete.

XD how cute thank you. you have a lot of tallent! and patientce too. is it very expensive to start such a hobby and is it a decent pay off? XD i saw your site with all the other creations you made and they are ADORABLE!

It's not too expensive to get started, depending on what you already have on hand -- most ponies from the new line run about $5, a can of Goof Off's about $3 and lasts forever (and plenty of customizers use acetone-based nail polish remover instead, which is even cheaper -- I've never been fond of it, though). As far as paint goes, you can buy a few tubes of artist-grade acrylic and mix your own colors, or you can pick up craft acrylics like Apple Barrel, which are very cheap. How much you'll pay for hair depends on what kind you decide to use -- Arachne's hair is from Restoredoll.com, but if you're just getting started, you might look for things like cheap costume wigs (very easy to find this time of year).
As for the pay-off... Honestly, no. There are a lot of people selling really nice customs these days, and there are also a lot of people selling not-so-decent customs, and the market's a bit glutted. Search eBay's ended listings for something like "custom my little pony" and you'll get a decent idea of the average price range. It can take a while to make a name for yourself. And even if you have a decent collection of hair and paint built up, so that each individual custom doesn't cost much in terms of supplies, you still have to figure in the time involved. It's the sort of hobby you do because you enjoy it, not so much because of the profit involved.

Cuz you got me intersted to start it as a hobby XD. I used to play with them when i was a little girl. I still live with my parents and my mother would LOATH me keeping them all >< hense why i ask of the pay off so i can get money to make more XD. it seems hard but fun.

If you decide to give it a try, I wish you luck! It can take a little while to get the hang of it, but it's enjoyable. Feel free to send me a note if you have questions, and I'll help if I can. ^_^

LOL, I wish they would. The new line's gotten a little too repetitive for my taste.

Very cool ^^ I'm a huge MLP fan, although I could never work up the courage to do this to one of them. I love the originals.
