Description
the first in my series of drawings related to the Dean Koontz book, "watchers". here's a little about experiment 33-9, aka Einstein. i know this is insanely long but please bare with me. trust me, the picture will make more sense if you read my description. i'd really rather you read it...this is experiment 33-9 of the banodyne laboratory's francis project. this super-smart dog was genetically engineered by Dr. weatherby. his goal was to create an intelligent dog without the alteration of the dog's regular physical appearance, in short, weatherby's eperiment looks exactly like your average golden retriever. why? in times of war, a dog would have absolutely no trouble crossing over into enemy territory. a very smart dog could then spy of said enemy and then report all it's information back to the united states. the dog could be taught to communicate with humans with a kind of "sign language" (of course it couldn't actually be made to talk since that would invole altering its physical appearance) additionally, 33-9 was wonderfully friendly and good natured in temperment. aside from the golden retriever, another creature was also spawned of banodyne, created by Dr. yarbeck. she wanted to create an intelligent creature that could accompany soldiers on the battle field; a kind of mutant police dog. yarbeck was not oppsed to changing the physical appearance of her creation; directly the opposite. she wanted to create a horrifying and dangerous creature that could not only destroy the enemy in war but also terrify them. yarbeck decided it would be better if her animal was hideous. she bred the creature to be big enough to threaten a grown man, have a massive jaw with long hooked teeth and a larger skull to accomidate a larger brain. it was bred to be visious, merciless, with a love of killing. Yarbeck's creation was called "the outsider" because it was outside of creation, there was no other beast even remotely alike in the whole world. soon "the outsider", being intelligent enough for self awareness, began to resent itself and its appearance. it despised its creators for making it that way! it was jealous of the dog, the favorite, it hated that dog! the outsider often expressing its desire to hurt and kill it! exisistence for both of the animals in the lab was miserable, they were both trapped, doomed forever to be confinded to their cages. the only pleasure for either of them was watching the "mickey mouse" videos for the duration of one of the lab's experiments (the purpose of the experiment was to see if the creatures could differentiate between reality and fantasy). both animals loved the mickey mouse videos, afterall, they featured intelligent animals living happy lives like human beings. both experiments wanted to believe in it. finally, one day, the dog devised and executed a successful escape from the lab. the outsider, realizing that if the dog escaped then it would lose its chance to destroy it, left too in persuit of the golden canine, tracking it through a mental connection that had mysteriously developed between the two. the dog, on the run from the outsider, accidently runs into a man named travis who feels his life has lost all purpose. he adopts the dog, naming him einstein after it demonstrates its brilliance to him. einstein helps Travis meet Nora, the woman he will later fall in love with and marry. they lead a happy life together, for a while. but einsteins problems are far from over. the government wants him back and the outsider considers to search for him relentlessly-- eh..you gotta read the book if you wanna know how it all comes out in the end!
okay, so you wanna know "whats with the scrabble pieces in the background, anyway?!" well, after travis and nora teach einstien to read he begins to communicate with them using scrabble pieces to spell out his messsage and tell them about his past. in the background are some of the words he spells. Einstein loves the expression "fit as a fiddle" and it becomes more relevant to the story later into the novel.
COMING SOON:
the next picture in my series is a potrait of the outsider!
Einstein and all characters and plotline mentioned (C) DEAN KOONTZ (to whom i will send the origional)
Art is mine
EDIT 7/8/06: as you know (maybe) this picture is part of a series dedicated to the book "watchers" by Dean Koontz. one of two works, the origional copy of this drawing was sent to the author himself (accompanied by letters from myself and my mother, Janet). In April, i recieved a response from Mr.Koontz and a signed copy of one of his books. i figured a link to the letter belonged here since these two pictures are still some of my most popular (which doesn't say much really..) anyway, here is Mr. Koontz's response:

I'm actually almost finished reading this book. I like how the plot threads soon tie together and the suspense keeps throughout the story. Definitely one of Koontz's best books. This is exactly how I saw Einstein: playful, loyal and smart. The use of the Scrabble tiles was neat.
It's wonderful that he responded too, especially how closely he holds this story dear. Splendid job!

Yep. Unfortunately, Watchers was my first Koontz book, so the rest of them only disappointed me.

aw! yeah i felt the same way for a while. though if you haven't already, you should try the christopher snow series ("Fear Nothing" is the first in the series, "Seize the Night" is the second.).these books have alot of the same themes as WATCHERS (super smart dogs and monkey-critters made in labs for example) and they even reference back to WATCHERS once. though they are not quite as satisfying as WATCHERS they are really good books to follow it up with. just my 2 cents i really enjoy alot of Mr. Koontz's writing.

*wriggles* Aieee, yet another wonderful fan piece for Watchers! Einstein is such a lovable dog, and I can see that playful, knowing look in his eyes with your drawing - the Scrabble pieces add to that perfectly. Awesome!
