I was a little disappointed to see Alex become a "grrr humanity is inferior grrr" villain, but I did enjoy Heller. Did not like his lack of armor form, but his dialogue in the bonus missions was hilarious.

Heller's actually... pretty cool.
I had my doubts at first, but after seeing some vids for the game, I think he's a better protagonist than Alex ever was.

Neither did I, I played both prototypes and I must say Heller is a better protagonist then Mercer, altough Alex Mercer wasn't a psycho in the beginning of the first game but still he had no reason to do what he did, James on the other hand gives you a goal of why are you doing what you must do, hence Heller is the better protagonist imo.

I think it's because he's much easier to identify with; he's a people person with a realistic goal, not a sociopath with a let-shit-happen mentality.

Considering Alex ended up turning into a kinda nice guy at the end of the first one I think there is more to it than what the trailers imply, never trust a trailer after all. They're probably gonna team up and brofist and kill some blackwatch or something.
