Hopeless Romantic
Finnabar isn’t the most graceful, despite being a member of the fae, which are usually referred to as the ‘Fair Folk’. In his case, he is very clumsy and tries to undo any mischief caused by his brethren if it could be helped. Aside from that, he is also a very gentle mannered creature, and always makes sure to be polite to whoever he speaks to. Unfortunately for him, however, making friends is difficult since people in his homeland tended to run away or comply to his wishes out of fear. Due to that he tends to be the elusive sort and hides if he is not wanted. He desperately wants that to change, but the habit of hiding in the shadows comes naturally to him, so he can’t really help it. Despite himself, he also dreamed of a romance with someone who cares about him deeply, but those are just dreams, it doesn’t sound realistic at all.
History
Finnabar grew up alone most of his life, left in a forest to grown and learn on his own. This kind of forest humans usually avoided, as rumors of fae and other creatures grew from it. Humans in his homeland were very superstitious and tended to listen to rumors such as those, though they were not wrong. Unfortunately for them, the warnings were sometimes forgotten or ignored and many wandered in, either to check it out or to use it as a shortcut.
Finnabar was curious about these creatures and often watched them in a guise of an animal, though they always appeared the same with his dark fur and yellow eyes. He loved the children the most, he always smiled as he watched them stary into the forest, their innocence extremely endearing to him. He knew he had to protect them from other creatures that prowled the same forest, knowing that they did not sense their innocence the same way he did. So, in the forms of various animals he lead them to safety and continued to do so for any human who strayed.
Once, a lovely maiden had wondered in, a mischievous look on her face every time she turned her head to look back, a male voice calling for her to come back, almost tearfully. Finnabar was awestruck by her beauty. She had hair like fire, which rolled in waves down her back. She wore a simple brown dress, obviously meant for farming rather than looking good, but that didn’t seem to diminish her beauty. Her laughter run through the dreary forest and he felt his heart light up with some emotion he could not identify. She made him hesitate to step into the light for once, unable to tear his gaze away from her. She didn’t seem to notice him, which was a blessing, she stood there in the clearing, the sun shining down upon her as if trying to embrace her with its beams. Even in the present, he remembers this day so vividly.
But it was not meant to be, as he made one of the worst mistakes he could make. Slowly, he moved his cloven feet towards her, as if approaching a wild doe. His hooves broke a branch, which caused her to swiftly turn her head towards the sound, her beautiful green eyes widening in horror. Finnabar instantly regretted stepping into the sunlight, but some naive part of him thought this wouldn’t make her run away. Fae were naturally beautiful, even the more monstrous ones had that kind of charm. Unfortunately for him, however, she screamed and ran away, almost tripping over a rock. She ran back to the male voice, who was shouting now. Paralyzed with humiliation and sadness, he stood there and felt the sun bit harshly into his grey-ish skin.
Months had passed since that had happened, though he still felt the pull of his heart, yearning for that lovely maiden. One night, a old man draped in a black robe walked into the forest, walking slowly with his crooked cane. Naturally, Finnabar was inclined to help him, so taking the guise of a large black horse with a flowing mane, he urged the old man to climb onto his back and took him down the path. The old man talked pleasantly, which was surprising, as he had usually heard old men talk with raspy or scratchy voices. But this one talked as if he was still in his youth. He rambled about many things, like the all too well know rumors about this forest, and then about impossible stories he encountered while growing up. The path was nearly to an end when the man surprised him once again. He tapped his muscular shoulder and chuckled, “You know, I haven’t seen many of your kind actually show genuine kindness to a human,” he could hear his smile in his voice as he continued, “Don’t act so surprised now, I may be old but I know a Fair Folk when I see one.”
Finnabar turned his giant head to gaze at the old man in awe with his glowing yellow eyes, and spoke, “If you knew what I was, why did you accept my offer to take you down this path?” He questioned, “For all you know, I could’ve done horrible things to you!”
The old man chuckled again, “Yet you didn’t do any of that,” he answered, “And as for your first question, my legs could only take me so far, I might’ve collapsed if you hadn’t helped me.”
“Still, aren’t your people wary of my kind?” Finnabar replied, his heartache showing through his tone of voice.
“Mmm,” the old man hummed, “Maybe you could make a difference about the opinion of your kind, hmm?”
“What do you mean by that?” His ears perked up curiously, intrigued by the mans strange words.
“I mean, maybe you could harness your powers and learn how to make opinion change for you?” He continued on, “Maybe find yourself a special someone while you're at it~” He winked.
Finnabar shifted his gaze away from him, ashamed, “I’m afraid that wouldn’t be possible, I mean, what could I even do to help my kind?”
The old man carefully slid off of his back, taking a wobbly hand into his cloak and handing him a parchment of paper, “Take this, and you’ll know.”
He took it with his claws, dismissing his horse guise. He looked up from the paper to say something but the man had vanished. He stared at the empty spot for a moment before looking back at the paper to read it, which only contained a few words, but it captured his attention fairly quickly.
“ Otherworlde Academy
Academy of the Dark Arts
Bind this contract with your blood and prepare to join the ranks of students longing to learn”
At the bottom of the paper was a large X, obviously for where he should write his name in blood.
He hesitated for a moment, taken back by this opportunity and what it could mean for him. An academy was for learning, and he needed to learn how to hone his powers and help other people.
So, almost without a second thought he pricked his finger and wrote out his name in his black blood.
Misc. Information:
He likes to help people even when it is not asked for, which might land him in some trouble if someone doesn't like people helping them
He is naturally very protective, which extends to strangers as well
He is very bad at socializing with people, and doesn't know if something he says might come off as too forward or offensive unless someone is blunt with him about it

Finnabar: O-Oh no! *reaches up and touched his horns, which are entangled in a willow trees branches* I-I’m terribly sorry you have to see me like this, hahaha, I can usually avoid this problem if it weren’t for the trinket I had found… *lifts up a silver amulet* I do love shiny things and I got so enamoured that I didn’t see where I was going… I don’t suppose you’ve lost anything like this, have you?
Lit Sample
“O-Oh no!” The tall creature reached up with his long claws to grapple at the tangle of leaves that ensnared his goat-like horns, glancing nervously at the person staring, “I-I’m terribly sorry you have to see me like this, “ He chuckled nervously, hunching over awkwardly, “I can usually avoid this problem if it weren’t for the trinket I had found…” He shows his other hand to the other to reveal a shiny silver amulet, the chain wrapped around his wrist, “I do love shiny things and I got so enamoured that I didn’t see where I was going…” He paused, a hopeful gleam appearing in his yellow eyes, “ I don’t suppose you’ve lost anything like this, have you?”
