Description     Man I have been wanting SO BADLY to talk about characters from MLP, considering I draw ponies a lot and my Next Generation stuff. So I like MLP a lot, I've watched it since I was a young child and still keep up with MLP related content as an adult. I have gone through my moments of liking and disliking characters, the characters I like I draw a bunch and even the characters I don't get some art and will get drawn for the Next Gen. Yeah this doesn't apply to the Pillars or Starswirl the Bearded.

Since the first physical feature of the characters, I didn't really care for them but when Shadow Play 1 and 2 came around and they started talking to the Mane 6, that's when I really didn't like them. I don't like the Pillars and Starswirl as both pieces of lore and as characters involved with the show, to be blunt I think they were not needed and pointless additions to the characters with screentime. I don't want these characters really apart of my Next Gen so I canon them as dead in it, no Limbo bullshit just dead. I will logically explain why both with the episodes they were apart of and discussing them and the characters themselves, I think these characters are one of the examples of where MLP started hitting pretty bad season rot bumps.

Let's get into talking about it now..

I'll start with the characters themselves cause doing the episodes will take longer and more in-depth explaining. In regards of the Pillars, 5 out of 6 have basically no personality or purpose to speak of really. They kinda just exist and barely have lines in episodes involving them (Rockhoof is the exception since he has a whole episode but is not the one I'm referring to) All the pillar characters can introduced as legends and stories told by other characters (Somnambula by the town folk, Mage Meadowbrook by Cattail and Starlight slightly, Mistmane, Flash Magnus and Rockhoof by Rarity, Rainbow Dash and Applejack respectfully.) They are all referred to as courageous and talented in some sense, we get that explain in their legend and the legend only. In Shadow Play I'm pretty sure they had little to no lines and when the episodes is over, they piss off until the Rockhoof episode to say "Hey we found a place to fit in which is basically out old lives eat shit". I know like they aren't meant to have too much personality since they are Main or Supporting cast but we are meant to give a shit about these characters and what they did/do and Oh boy its not much. I'll talk about the whole issue of them suddenly fitting in with the episode bit but they really have nothing as a personality besides just beings "Hey we are just what the Mane 6 were but not as interesting".

The only character of the Pillars that has any personality is Starswirl and OH BOY is it not interesting in the slightly, We learn Starswirl's name WAY back in Season 2 and learn about as a powerful unicorn. We learn that is was incredibly skilled at magic, creating a bunch of spells that we have seen in the show like the Time Travel spell for Cutie Remark, he was seemingly a nice pony who befriended Scorpan to turn against his brother. He was a good person from the stories told about him, come to see him in the episode Shadow Play and he is the prime example of "Never meet your heroes". He is just a dickhead clear cut, he is passive aggressive to everyone or even just verbally aggressive, he reasonable is like this due to Twilight releasing them and the Pony of Shadows but it's also mainly because of his "lack of friendship".... Yeah sure not like he has befriended others before but sure. His behaviour and hostility honestly just feels like this just to prove a point that Twilight and Starlight are better ponies at saving the world, which we kinda knew already. We know Twilight was better because she 1) completely one of his unfinished spells that MADE HER AN ALICORN and 2) The fact they try to reform the villains they fight. It has been shown that the Pillars have a massive banishment trigger finger with Strygian and the Sirens (which I wanna know if they were banished THOUSANDS OF YEARS AGO why they only really attacked with the Mane 6 era). He has zero respect for anyone, constantly undermining Twilight and Starlight and not trusting anyone's ideas besides his own which is just seal away Stygian again (Because he is an asshole for the entire runtime.) You can have a character be an asshole but there is a difference between an asshole you want to see improve and one who should of stayed dead, Guess which one Starswirl should be.

I think I said alot about the characters (Mainly Starswirl) so let's do Episodes

In terms of the episodes they are apart of/appear in Season 7 and 8 feel fairly boring, they aren't interesting characters and if they truely are we don't get much out of them

Season 7 Shadow Play 1 and 2 was uninteresting and felt like it was meant to still hammer in a dumb point we've know for a long time of that Twilight is better and even make Starlight feel like she is being smarter. It kinda just adds 7 new characters we aren't gonna learn much about nor be on screen long enough to care about. We learn that the concept of Limbo exists and beings in that location dont age which means they probably don't need to eat, sleep or drink anything and are left just in a constant coma until Twilight and co. free them. We mainly learn that reforming the villians who were wronged or did wrong is better that sealing them away (which we go back to sealing them again but dw about that)

In the season 8 episode Friendship University it mainly has Twilight and Rarity trying to expose Flim and Flam while they run a Friendship University with Twilight book, the point where the Pillars are involved is with Starswirl enrolling in this school which is just a plot point that just shows how dumb Starswirl is now compared to his assholeness from before. Starswirl knows Twilight has a school she runs but doesn't go to it cause I guess he is traveling. This episode is just a waste and it has the Flim Flam brothers show up to just conclude something that Fluttershy and AJ mainly were apart of with the Gladmane episode and they aren't seen again.

The episode Rockhoof and a Hard Place is probably the biggest waste of time i've ever seen, it's basically focusing on Rockhoof feeling like he has no place and can't return home cause there are archologists overrunning his homeland. It shows how the Pillars have adjusted to the Modern life with Mage Meadowbrook, Somnambula, and Mistmane returning to their homes, Flash Magnus is just in the guards again, Strygian becoming a writer and Starswirl is just traveling. I get the would probably adjust ok if they are just going back to what they were doing, you do have to grasp its alot for them to take in realistically. The Pillars have been in limbo for over a thousand years and suddenly coming back to the future for them and considering we don't know how long is has been since they were freed, it comes off as they just adjust quickly. It reminds me of Futurama with Fry where he is also taken a thousand years in the future and having to adjust to this new life expect with the pillars there is no adjust. Back to the main plot it just ends with Rockhoof becoming basically a old folklore storyteller, basically saying he has no place besides being a "back in the old days" kinda person. The episode has no point and kinda just feels like its meant to waste episode slots so we can go the the Cozy Glow villian arc at the correct time.

From what's left of Season 8 to the finale of Season 9, they are kinda just around and don't do much besides say things and thats it. They mainly appear during the finale when Tirek, Chrysalis and Cozy Glow are defeated with the Mane 6 and Young 6 power of Friendship and thats it.

Overall this is mainly why I don't like Starswirl and the other Pillars, What do y'all think of them and feel free the explain your points in a wordy way. I enjoy learning others opinions on characters and what characters should I write next stuff for next.
