Description
OK! After releasing my Total DramaRama character meme, some people have been asking me "why I don't like Gwen anymore?". Let me make this clear. I still love Gwen; but I HATE Daycare Gwen. Why? Because she doesn't act like Gwen.Oh boy, where do I begin?
When I first heard that Gwen was one of the last confirmed characters, AFTER the first episode came out (yeah I'm still annoyed that Fresh won't tell their fans anything until the product comes out), I was not happy; mainly because Megan Fahenbock was fired due to not being able to do a 4 year old Gwen voice. In my opinion, if you can't let Megan voice her, then you shouldn't have her at all. Megan Fahenbock is Gwen, and no one else can replace her; not even the new actress who is "meh" in my opinion.
Oh but it gets worse. When I finally saw her in "Venthalla", I was like; "This isn't Gwen. This is someone pretending to be Gwen." She kept talking about death (Crane related Death satistics and saying that the kids will die during their mission). Classic Gwen wouldn't say anything like this (well OK the second one maybe, but not in a creepy way). Not only was she the worst part of the whole episode, she's the worst part of this WHOLE spin-off.
And it doesn't stop there. In "Aquarium for a Dream", when she tells Chef about how to tell the others that they've been killing the Daycare's pet goldfish over and over again, she does it in a very mean spirited tone. Sheesh Gwen, be nice like your TDI counterpart. She even talks about death again and also gets annoyed at herself for making a pun. I think TDI Gwen would be fine making puns.
Then in "Cone in 60 Seconds", she gets Owen to do her work for her; cleaning out her cubby full of dangerous and spooky animals (even though it did help Owen get the money he needed for his ice cream). Once again she's being creepy and careless. And what she did in this one, I felt like this would be the kind of thing that Heather would be doing. Yeah, I'm actually wishing that Heather was in this instead of Gwen. Plus Gwen shouldn't have agreed to help Owen in the end of the episode. She should have been the one who stayed behind and not Bridgette (I'm still not going to let that go). She clearly doesn't give a damn about the others. But hey, at least she's not talking about death this time around.
I mean really, why would Gwen talk about death? She should be afraid of it; like me. And that fact should have been true in "That's a Wrap"; when Gwen decided to take a nap in a coffin. WHAT! Gwen, aren't you supposed to be afriad of being buried alive? Jeez, the more I watch you, the less I like you. I could see Crimson doing this, but not you.
And there lies the problem. The writers gave Crimson's personality to Gwen. Why change it? Was it because of how she was handled in All Stars? Or is it just because they needed an antagonist/anit-hero for this show? Just use her old personality from TDI. There was no need to change it. Only characters who were written poorly from the start of their run should have their personalities changed (like I did with Sky). Now some say that this is alright because it's different from the original. But they kept everyone elses personalities in tact; Duncan is still a bully but not a criminal bully, Courtney is still bossy at times but she's much friendlier and isn't bragging on how she's the best, and Izzy is still crazy but not psycho crazy. Everyone still acts the same way they've always acted; just dumbed down a bit. But Gwen, they changed her completely.
Some say that this Gwen is like Lucy Loud from The Loud House. Big difference; Lucy actually cares about her sisters and Lincoln. I haven't seen this Gwen care about someone else yet. Yeah, Lucy is better than TDR Gwen. Heck, even Sam Manson from Danny Phantom is better than her; and she's almost like TDI Gwen (she's acts a bit more Gothish than Gwen but their personailities are almost the same). Those are the type of Goths I like; not these completely bored, moody, and careless types.
Oh, and now in "Tiger Fail", she's become a bit of a bully and a troublemaker; stomping on a Hannah Hug doll (that better not be Courtney's), ripping off the head of Owen's teddy bear with her teeth, popping Chef's balloon and making him cry, and just down right scaring and tricking everyone around her. Uh, since when did Gwen become the new Duncan?
The only episode where I could see her as her old self was "The Date". She was hanging out with LeShawna and she wanted to help Owen out in the beginning. To me, THAT was Gwen. That was how she's supposed to act. And there was one quick moment in "Aquarium for a Dream" when she was cheering Chef on when he tried to tell the truth to the others about the goldfish. And I will admit, I do think she looks cute when she takes her nap. Also, 82 year old Gwen from the ending of "Tiger Fail" acted like Gwen a bit; mainly because Megan reprised her role in that ending (though I wish it was 19 year old Gwen). But other than those moments, I don't like her.
I also think that she has the worst outfit redesign of all. Why did they have to change the color scheme of her clothing; and remove the black dye from her hair? The old one was fine. My only guess is that they wanted her to have more brighter colors to go along with the color scheme of this series. Not everything has to be bright. The only outfit redesign that works is Courtney's.
To be honest, I would rather have Crimson or Heather in this instead of Gwen. If they can't use her right, then she shouldn't be here at all. If there was actual character development in this, then I would be alight if they started her out like this, but sadly that's not the case. That's why I dislike Daycare Gwen. I hope that answered your question. And if not, then watch the episodes I've mentioned for yourself. And I think that's the main problem with this question; you guys have never even watched a single episode of this nor even given it a chance. If you hate it, then don't watch it; but at least give these episodes a chance and you'll see how right I am about this version of Gwen. I also believe that TDI Gwen would agree with me on this. And this might be her response to all this:
Gwen: (Holding a picture of herself) OK, this is the real me. (Holds up a picture of Daycare Gwen) Not this! (Holds up the picture of herself again) This! (Holds up the picture of Daycare Gwen again) Not this! (Holds up the picture of herself again) Winner! (Holds up the picture of Daycare Gwen again) Loser!
It's official, I will never like Total DramaRama Gwen, EVER!

Another bad example of changing a character completely is what they did to Leshawna. They basically turned her into into a kid sized version of Heather. I know Leshawna had her moments, but there few and far between, not...that.
You ever thought of talking about her incarnation? Sort of a sequel to this?

Yeah! She acts more like a bully at times rather than protecting friends from bullies.
Not really. I only did this because Gwen was one of my all-time favorites.

I know, right? Why would they do that? If they had to include a bratty character, Heather would have been perfect! But instead, they used the exact opposite!
Okey dokey then.

Oh yeah! That was how she was supposed to be at the start of the series. And that episode was basically the last really good episode of the season.

The Ant one was probably the closest she was to her classic counterpart, the Ninja one was her best supporting role, and the Easter episode was funny.

I agree with most of the points you made. I really hated Total DramaRama Gwen at first, she gets a bit more tolerable but that's it. She really is like a Crimson knockoff or something (like that little girl from the Adams family or something). Her personality is just NOT Gwen! She is portrayed too dreary, creepy, and dark. Gwen was the "weird", anti-social, somewhat awkward, blunt, yet kind reclusive goth girl. Not an edgy, morbid, creepy, emo, death-loving goth. I didn't mind her doing things that were a bit mean or childish cause she is a kid but they should have had lessons learned and reasons for certain childish behaviors. Her new outfit is okay IMO.
...
This show would just be all around better if they weren't trying to cater to all the wrong things... It makes sense because this is an AU where they are younger that they act a bit different but Gwen is just way off. (Ugh, a small nit pick but all the characters should have had outfit changes to match their younger selves and Duncan and Gwen should not have their hair dyed). Anyways I feel like they dropped the ball on some key points in this spinoff series. It's okay just disappointing and annoying.

THe main reason Gwen had the personality change is probably to appeal to fans of the goths from RR. After RR came out many believed that C & E were much better than Gwen and Gwen should act more like them. Fresh is just giving fans what they wanted

I agree, it's very confusing why TDR Gwen is very different from the original to this day! I won't say she's the worst character in the spin-off but still one of the weakest and a big mixed bag...
Well, to be fair on Aquarium for a Dream the kids are still unaware what they did to Richard every time and Chef was too much of the sissy to tell them the truth, and before Gwen's rant, she tried to warn them but they won't listen, so Gwen's angry rant about it was justified as she was surrounded by idiots. I blame it on the writing of the episode.
And Tiger Fail, they went too far with Gwen being over-Gothic and destroying toys, but the other kids did the same early in the episode and despeate to get Gwen to crack so they can get Chocolate Ice Cream and at least Bridgette was nice to Gwen, and she shows no ill will to her, so.... that's something.
But still, I do agree I prefer the original Gwen than the TDR Gwen, like you. If Rama can make a good Courtney, back to her roots than there's no excuse.
