Description
Commission for ScarletCougar for her fanfic, The Hard Secrets of Altair and Malik from Chapter 243 .Whatever my opinion of AC yaoi, this author has my undying respect because it's not easy for someone with dyslexia to write a fic that's over 200 chapters. You go girl!
For the piece itself, Altair is taking his first leap of faith that isn't a half-baked suicide attempt (read the fic for more details), so I went with dawn colors, lots of pinks and purply-blues to get the right mood. Altair is jumping towards the warmer pinks and away from the sadder purples, and a hapless novice watches in utter awe (and not a little terror).
The wood planks were done no less than three times trying to find the right color scheme that didn't draw one's eye to it instead of to Altair. I don't think I was completely successful but trust me that other attempts were much worse. The castle itself I finally learned and feel like an idiot for now knowing how to download and install new brushes, and one of them created a great stone texture. The pillars and the inner cavern of the tower didn't come out quite so good, and is another sign that I still have a lot to learn. If anybody has suggestions for future pieces, please let me know.
But I will say, a girl can spend her entire life painting clouds and it would not be a life wasted. See if you can find the eagle in the clouds!
As always, let me know what you think!

Really a nice work you got here.
You captured all the right feeling for this scene.
The stone texture is very convincing, and your clouds are incredible (unfortunately I cannot finde the eagle).
AltaΓ―r really is the first thing you notice when looking at this piece.
So much that it takes a second moment to notice the novice. And that is a positive thing, as it mean we are so taken by Leap of Faith.
as the wooden board, it would be impossible for than not be noticed, considering everything around them is of lighter color.
But I did not think it is a problem.... Maybe you could use a grayer tone, considering it is still dawn, and so the colors feel a little different...
Regarding the inner parts of the castle, it would be an overkill to make then very detailed. It this was a photo, these areas would be dark....
Maybe you could add a line representing the ceiling, but it is not really so necessary.
The only thing you could improve a little is the columns... they would represent the volume better with mor shadowing.

You can draw clouds when you feel like it! And I think I know what made all the difference: Here (and in A Breathe of Summer) all the clouds dragging across the sky have the same direction, if they are prolonged they are all prolonged along roughly the same axis. There's too little visible of the clouds in Shojo-Yo at Sunset, which creates the feeling it's not the case there.
I spotted a bird, a giant frog, and at least three fish hunting and eating each other.

I love all the comment's you're throwing at me, it's making my day!
Most clouds I've endeavored to do actually come out great, except for that one piece (hence my bitching about it). I'm glad you like these, and found much more than I ever intended in the clouds (this is why I love them ).
Thanks for the comment!

I did my best.
I'm like that. Show me a blob of something and I'll be able to imagine something in it. I once did a Rorschach test. The psychologist was a bit perplexed by the amount of notes he had to take.
You're welcome.

I respect those clouds quite a bit.
Im also pretty sure I found the eagle (Is it just a head, or am I seeing something else?)
For suggestions;
Well, I dont quite know these characters or their background, nor how things are supposed to look. But from an artists view, they look really flat. If you had shaded the tops of the pillars to make them seem more "In" the castle instead of flat even, I think you would've been more satisfied with the piece. They could also use a lot more shading around the sides to give them a "Curving" feel, you know? Theyre round, not flat. The inside should have had more definition too, its just a basic blue color. The tops of the windows (Thats what Im assuming they are) shouldve been darker, since light at the angle you have it wouldnt hit the top, so therefore it would be lighter at the bottom. You might even include somethings inside the windows that would be objects inside the castle. Without glass, you would be able to see inside the building, and from what I see here they're normal castle windows, no glass. Also, the top spaces between the castles should have had another section on them, to make them look 3D
To be fair, the only part that bothers me is the windows. Otherwise, I like what you've done here. Again; I love the clouds, and I think the texture on the castle is great. I personally would have posed the character a bit differently, but I do like how you have him. Its not the cliche diving pose like I probably would have done.
Best of luck to ya!

Yep, the eagle is just it's head, props for finding it!
At first I wasn't sure what you meant about the castle being flat, but looking at it again I can see what you mean. The face of the castle seen here are two circular columns with a flat face between them and that made "lighting" them a bit of a challenge, and looking at it now I can see what you mean about it being flat. The middle part is supposed to be, but the two columns probably should have more detail in their shading.
The inside behind the arches, you are right, is very flat with the blues. The idea at the time was that with the sun positioned where it was you wouldn't really see "inside," but looking at it now looks more like a copout.
And I didn't even realize I'd missed the tops of the arches... Shame on me.
Thanks for pointing these out to me, and I'm glad you liked the clouds and the textures. Altair's pose is deliberate and common for the franchise.
Thanks for the wonderful and helpful comment!

Thanks!
I'm glad I could help! Again, I dont know the whole thing, but I'm glad my comment made sense enough to you that you could see what I meant and didn't take it to heart. I hate offending people when I'm only trying to help ^^
And okay! That makes sense then, I just dont know the character well enough to know what would be common and uncommon xD
No problem!

Wow... what are the guidelinrs for a comission? Or perhaps an art-trade? This is really cool.

The full guidelines for commissions are on my profile, but it boils down to this:
COMMISSION PRICES:
Simple LineArt person: 15 US Dollars
Basic Colored person: 25 US Dollars
Shaded Colored person: 30 US Dollars
Shaded Colored person with detailed background: 35 US Dollars
That's all based on me drawing one person/character. There is an additional 5 US dollar charge for extra characters, and I won't do more than four total.
So this piece, because of there being two characters and having a detailed background, was a $40 piece. If you interested in commissioning me note me the request and we'll talk.
As for an art trade... I've never done those before. (feels like a n00b) Is there anything specific for that or is it as simple as it sounds?

An art-trade is basically when one artist does somethibg in return for the work of the other artist. Like I could write a stpry for you and ypu draw somethi g for me. Its really easy. Its lile you commissioned me and I conmissioned you. Payment for each of us is the product of the trade. I can do a literaturevfor you..

While the idea has merit I'm not looking for any literature at this time. You can still commission me, though, whenever you want.

this is so amazing! The unusual angle (bottom-up) makes it extra exciting. The characters and sky - oh I just can't stop looking at it! All I think you could improve is working a little more on the building but to me the use of texture and shading on the building is quite good. The 'wood texture' is also very well done.

Ooo, thanks for the great comment! I'm so glad you like it.
You're right that the building isn't great, but then again given my track record with architecture in general, this is actually a win.
Again, thanks for the comment!

Thank you so much for this amazing commission. I did not find the eagle in the clouds, but will keep looking. I still absolutely love the very slight and tranquil smile on Altair's face. He is at peace with himself. You captured the mood well. Thanks again!

The mood is one of the most important parts of a piece, and I'm super happy you enjoy it! I'll give a hint for the eagle' it's a profile of it's head. Have fun finding it, and uber thanks for the commission!

Thank you! Though I can't take credit for the outfit, Altair there comes from the video game franchise Assassin's Creed. A great game.
Thanks for the comment!

I'm not a fan of animating Assassin's Creed but, this picture was just too lovely. The perspective on it is wonderful ... and it has this calming aura about it -- a free and peaceful quality that makes me reserve such prior judgment of the style. I really like this. Very nicely done.

I'll admit I'm not sure what you mean by animation, unless you mean the cell shading?
Regardless of that, thanks you so much for the positive feedback. I'm glad the mood of the piece superseded your initial distaste for the cell shading. That's impressive.
Thanks for the comment!
