Description Hi guys!

Some news from Maple. I am almost done with the prototype. Ii just have to fiddle with knees and feet a little more and widen her eyes (you can only see the irises of the 8 mm eyes I got hert atm -_-*, I liked her with this eye shape )

See this crazy pose that she can take with some tweeking? She's quite stable on top of this!

The beautiful blue wig come from Japan. For comparision sake,Maple is a little taller than a Barbie.

...which is the material used to build  her?...*-*

I used air-drying clay (brand was "Plastiroc", but any air drying clay is OK).
And then I used Tamiya primer and fine sandpaper to smooth surfaces.

Does she fit into premade clothes or will you have to sew them yourself?

Mirving In reply to PaperOwls [2013-07-12 09:11:12 +0000 UTC]

Up until now I only tried a few clothes (this project is on hold for the moment unfortunately because I am abroad for one year and can not bring my all my stuff with me). For the bottom, she can fit in Minifee sizes skirts (trousers won't do as they are too long). On the top I tried a Yo-Sd sized corset, was OK but the waist was not fitting exactly. MNF and U-SD sizes are not perfect fit unfortunately (you can see what she looks like when wearing them here: [link] ). It's OK as long as I do not need a snug fit, otherwise I'll have to make some clothes myself indeed. But I don't mind, I like to sew for my dolls.

thankies! I re-made her a pair of feet with little toes and nails. Like them better than the previous ones. I'll show them when I made the last modifications on Maple.

Mirving In reply to MOGGGET [2012-08-02 08:24:38 +0000 UTC]

Thanks! Some people told me that her head was too small compared to the hips, but I don't think so. I especially made the silhouette such that the hips are really wide. The head is proportional to the shoulder width.

Amazing shapes and poseability! Great work! I love her hands so much - it's not easy to sculpt hands!

Mirving In reply to scargeear [2012-08-02 08:22:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks a lot! Hands were indeed hard to sculpt, so I used Fimo because air drying clay is much more difficult to work with for this kind of little detailed pieces.

Boustophedon In reply to Mirving [2012-07-30 21:20:26 +0000 UTC]

i really do like them a lot i am in the process of learning how to make them all by myself. my only resources have been youtube, random web pages and people on DA that put up pictures like yours i noted the hips on your figure because i really like the waist/hip section on your figure, and wanted to incorperate that into my design a little. if you wouldnt mind of course it is hard though seeing as i am only using air dry clay (the Crayola brand, i know right?) because i dont have the money or the experience to really use polymer clay just yet... i really wish someone could just show me from start to finish how to make a doll >.< would be much easier. but wish me luck

Mirving In reply to Boustophedon [2012-07-31 07:21:08 +0000 UTC]

I was in the same case as yours a year ago. Maybe I can give you some tips.

Concerning the clay, any air drying clay should work just fine, as long as it is not simple clay (like potter clay) which is too brittle for doll making. I don't use polymer clay either, except for the parts that can be made in one round, like hands or feet. Keep in mind that polymer clay is difficult to work with to make the joints because you need to bake it and it can not really be worked further afterward. Air drying clay or Epoxy clay is much more practicable.

Well, I don't have a claim on large hips, I did not make them, so make your doll as you wish. ;D

Maybe you could use these few ressource links an documents:

-first a book that I really like a lot, even if it is written in Japanese and I can not understand it. The pictures in it are quite self explanatory: Yoshiba style - Ball jointed doll making guide by Ryo Yoshida

-On this website, you can download a really cool paper about joints and how they work by registering in the newsletter (you can de-register afterward if you don't want to receive the newsletters): [link]

-I come from a french forum called "Materiel Celeste" where there is a really comprehensive thread about doll making (that is where I started from one year ago). Despite the fact that it is in french, maybe you could browse through, there are a lot of WIP pictures that can help you figure out doll making. [link]

-If you have the occasion to attend a doll meet near your place, you should defenitively go, you'll certainly have the chance to see and manipulate real BJD for freeeee and meet people eager to help you. I made great progress by seeing actual BJD myself (and I ended up buying one, but this is another story), and speaking with other people interrested in this hobby.

-Well, if I can be of some help, don't hesitate to ask me. I have the project to make a Tutorial about doll making the next time I start a new doll.

Ahah. Glad I could help.
Well, as I said, if you need advices, don't hesitate to ask me or other BJD makers.
Most of the artists are lonely nerdy people that really like to share their tips and technics. Don't hesitate to ask.
