Description
Above are the six birds I have had the honor of hunting with in my first decade of falconry. <3 I have worked with many more birds in regards to education/rehab/breeding and other falconers' birds, but the above six are the ones that were on my personal permits; the ones I actively trained and hunted with. I like to hunt with birds for a season or two and then release back to the wild, more successful and proficient in what they do.From left to right:
Bud, Red-Tailed Hawk 2007.
Storm, Red-Tailed Hawk 2008.
Charm, Red-Tailed Hawk 2008 to 2010.
Piper, American Kestrel 2011.
Rambo, American Kestrel 2012.
Phoenix, Red-Tailed Hawk 2015 to 2017.
Here is to the next 10 years, and my next falcon (coming soon!), lucky #7!
Please note that falconry is a highly regulated form of hunting in the USA. Falconry is not pet keeping; falconers must complete a two-year apprenticeship, pass a written examination, pass an inspection of facilities and equipment, and must maintain paperwork for nearly every action done in regards to their birds.

The Red-Tails hunted primarily squirrels and rabbits, while the little kestrels pursued house sparrows and european starlings!Β

Why do you have to hand over birds after a certain amount of time? I always thought it was kind of useless. You grow so familiar with the animal and then you have to give it up. -shrug

It certainly isn't useless; falconers will take birds from the wild that are in their first year (as allowed by the state), and most raptors in their first year face a sobering 80% mortality rate due to disease, inexperience, exposure, starvation, etc. Falconers will take these birds, give them ample opportunities to hunt but will do everything in their favor to reduce the odds of death (safe place to house at night, always a full meal at the end of the day even if they miss while hunting, etc.), and giving them a year or two of experience to hone their skills and then release them dramatically increases their survival rate. Some falconers choose to release after a season or two, while others will keep birds for several years or for their whole lives. In the near future I'd like to keep a bird for several years to compare. Will see!Β

These are really pretty ^^Β
If I may ask, how did you get into falconry? It's not exactly a prominent hobby

I grew up in a hunting family, and due to a pretty random occurrence, I got interested in birds of prey early on in grade school! The rest was kinda history. Β
