Description
Coming back from hunting today, I saw this. I had initially suspected this was a very large dog (deerhound, wolfbound, mastiff, dane, anatolian shepherd etc), and maybe it is.. but this thing moved so weirdly, and was as BIG as the quarter horses in the next field. Not deer, not elk, not a mountain lion. Had a definite tail held low and slightly curled behind it, had what looked like smooth/short coat (except the tail), grey-tan in color. It didnt have the elongated skull of most typical large breeds. Some folks have been suggesting deerhound/wolfhound; I think that's my closest guess for now. This thing was MASSIVE though.A few interesting things to note:
Day was cold and overcast. This was taken about a mile from my house in a field of corn stubble. This thing stopped and stared straight at me when I took the photo. Head is on the left side of the body. I'd get prints, but it is on private property.
Moved slowly with a slow stride. I know some of the larger shepherd breeds can have cat-like movements when stalking.. maybe it was one of those?
The closest thing I can think of is that it was dog-like. It does not look like any coyote I've ever seen, nor any of the local farm dogs (which I know like the back of my hand).
Please note that I have grew up in the rural midwest and am someone who is both a biologist and a hunter, having spent countless hours in the field, and have seen nothing like this before. Whatever this is, it's larger than any whitetail I've seen (which I've seen countless of), even larger than bucks with swelled-up necks in the heat of the rut. The thing throwing me off is sheer size. It was massive!
Also, I have hands-on experience with Danes and some of the larger shepherd breeds, but not deerhounds or wolfhounds, admittedly
Also sorry for my potato of a phone camera; it is terrible at capturing crisp photos, especially in overcast conditions, I zoomed in and upped the contrast in this photo

Looking at this again...The stomach looks either torn open, with entrails hanging out, or incredibly furry. That could just be the background though.. And it does NOT look like any type of dog, looking at that neck and head size. It's misectoin, if not cut open, is incredibly tiny! It looks like only a spine can fit in there! And for it's movements, that would be accounted for if the entrails were out, but you didn't say anything about blood..Strange thing is still strange! And to me, the head looks like one blob. But if it does have ears, they're that typical triangle shape. Weird thing... Have you seen it at all as of late? Or anything similar?

I haven't seen this recently, but I echo what you've said here! It is just.. really strange. I'll have to run by there tomorrow and see if I see anything

Maybe you should have a camera on you for better quality and perhaps you’ll have another encounter?

What stands out to me are the ears and a slightly curled tail, while others are saying elk or wolfhound or even anatolian shepards, I would suggest a saluki. Salukis are exceptionally tall at 28", rivaling wolfhounds who stand around 32", and can be long furred and shaggy or groomed. Generally when groomed the fur on their ears and slightly curled tails remains long and flowy and I feel as though I see that in this picture. Here are some saluki examples:

It does kind of have saluki features, with the exception of the sheer bulk of this creature's body! I wonder if it could be some type of sighthound cross with something larger?

Very possible, I once had a mutt breed dog that stood at 30". But I fairly certain this is a domestic animal. Wild animals (unless it's a feral stray) do not develope flopped ears, and the ears on this creature definitely hang

I agree wholeheartedly! I'm almost certain this is some type of domestic canine, but man it's huge

Looks like an Irish Wolfhound (or a mix), IWs can be bred to be very tall; my boyo was on the middle tallness-wise and he was about 92 cm on the shoulder. His head was high enough to be around my breast level, and he would've been taller than me (170cm) when standing on his hind feet. IW males can be over 100 cm tall (withers), and they do have a 'jog' like movement for hunting purposes Curling tail end is also nothing new on IWs, my doggos tail was so long that it touched the ground lmao!! I hope you see it again for better video/photos, just out of curiosity.
My Yeti , there's one pic of him jumping as well the first one is him reaching up to me (170 cm) ^^

Oh my gosh, what a wonderful Yeti! <3 My best guess at this point it's either a wolfhound/deerhound/anatolian/etc
aka something huge

Well, wolfhounds can be taller than a human when they stand on their hind feet. But I don't know why one would be wandering around a field @_@

DEMON!
Nah I doubt that haha. It might be just a really big doggo? I can totally see some sort of two large breeds in it but it's head(from the picture) looks a little small for its body. I can kind of see a dane in it but it must be mixed with some other large dog because it looks so thick. Not sure I know of any dogs big enough to rival a horse though.

Utterly confused... I can agree with it possibly being a Wolfhound/Deerhound the pictures I saw kinda looked like it
or you could be lazy like me and say it's a cryptid of some kind

I don't know any breed of dog nearly tall enough to rival a quarter horse. Even the tallest dog recorded in the world was only 44 inches tall.
It definitely gives off vibes of an anatolian shepherd just looking at the lightness against the (I'm assuming) dark ears and muzzle. The only thing I can think of that could be bigger are a Kangal or Boz Shepherd which are both Turkish Breeds. You've got yourself a bit of a mystery here don't you.
Honestly the thing that concerns me the most is the midsection, which looks... strange lol.

Right?! It definitely looked canine to me, but the sheer size of the thing is what's throwing me off.. and the midsection just looks weird. The whole thing gave me the heebie jeebies tbh
I'm trying to convince myself it was just some majorly huge wolfhound or something

wolfhounds are a bit larger than deerhound, so I'm leaning towards a wolfhound. The low-res makes it hard to tell what in the world it is though.
