Description Why is a raven like a writing desk?

So I saw Alice in Wonderland this past weekend, and it was amazing! I've been waiting for Mr. Burton to do an Alice in Wonderland for about 3 years now, and I was not disappointed!
Mia was the perfect Alice, she was soooo good. And Johnny Depp did such a great job as the Hatter. I loved all the characters, they were all wonderful!

Alice in Wonderland is copyright Lewis Carroll
This version-> Tim Burton

movie buried the original characters/storyline in a bunch of garbage imo

That's your opinion, and I respect it, because it's an opinion and everyone has a right to one of course. But this is my artwork, not the film.

it's artwork of the film...

i suggest you read the original alice's adventures in wonderland. it's only 97 pages and carrol's writing style is so cute too.

Oh I've read both 'Alice's Adventures in Wonderland' and 'Alice, Through the Looking-Glass' more than once. I'm a huge fan of Carroll's work. I think his writing style is so witty and satirical, and perfect for the children of the age. It gave them something else to read beside morals and strict, more Puritan-esque rules. Carroll was a genius, and Sir John Tenniel was equally brilliant for his work with the illustrations. The way the two of them captured political essences from the time period is great too. I've always loved Queen Victoria's little cameo appearance.
So it's not like I don't have a clue about the original books. I respected the movie for what it was, though if I were to make my own version it wouldn't be as extravagant with the makeup, especially for the Mad Hatter. However I do think that Alice herself was magnificent and acted perfectly as if she was the real Alice grown up. So I drew this picture of her.

none of the character's personalities were even close to the originals.

it's incredibly uncreative to take a story and it's characters, change them slightly/ or greatly to try to make them more your own, and then just call it a tribute to a great classic. there was nothing tributary about it at all... im sorry if i come off as a dick but as far as art goes, this level of emulation just does not feel right to me.

i feel like it's doing a disservice to the youth to have them associating alice's adventures in wonderland with something so devoid of the beauty and depth than the original book had.

*sigh* Well I'm not much more of an arguing kind of person. It's a waste of time in my opinion. So I'm done. Nice chatting with you.

a raven is like a writing desk because they both played a part in the creation of one of the darkest and most famous odes to love, loss and life ever written.

thanks. I was thinking about it, and it drew me to Poe. Maybe Lewis Caroll (sp) was a Poe fan and did it to pay homage???

*notices typo in earlier comment* 'tis what I get for copy/pasting a supposedly reputable source without reading it first ^m^ whoever wrote it 'fixed' the deliberate misspelling of "never" - the answer is 'Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is nevar put with the wrong end in front!' - "nevar" being "raven" backwards - Carroll was fond of such wordplay ^_~

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

MissDarling23 In reply to selkie-x [2010-03-16 01:06:48 +0000 UTC]

Yeah I've read about how he originally didn't have an answer and such, and I love the answer he came up with. But I never knew about the "nevar" part, that's so interesting! Carroll was so clever.

selkie-x In reply to MissDarling23 [2010-03-16 00:20:25 +0000 UTC]

Carroll never intended the riddle to have an answer but he received endless letters demanding one anyway and eventually added a preface to later print runs of the book:

"Enquiries have been so often addressed to me, as to whether any answer to the Hatter's Riddle can be imagined, that I may as well put on record here what seems to me to be a fairly appropriate answer, viz: 'Because it can produce a few notes, tho they are very flat; and it is never put with the wrong end in front!' This, however, is merely an afterthought; the Riddle, as originally invented, had no answer at all."

Evidently the public weren't impressed and peeps have been producing alternate answers ever since ^_^

I really like this drawing. It's definitely done with your unique style, but I also feels like it gets across something very essential about how her character was portrayed in the film. Very well done!
