Id like to get into avatars myself -- and do something a bit more interesting than what I have done for myself...
One of many things on my long list of art and writing projects to get my head around and make time for.

good luck with it. i use jasc software i have paint shop pro 8 and animation shop 3.05 and i combine both together to make the icons, so easy. lol the only problem is is gettting the sixe to be 15k.
